Cooling in Setup

Hey, anyone who's willing to answer please, I'm trying to get into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency mining. I'm not sure if I need a cooling rig for just one computer, but some sites say I need equipment that's more expensive than the computer itself! I don't think this is meant for a residential environment (just my house not some big warehouse full of computers). So I'm wondering, do I really need to get a huge cooling setup, or will just keeping the room it's in at a reasonable level be enough? Thanks for any help in advance!

You can't mine bitcoin with a computer.  You'll end up spending more in electricity than you'll ever earn in bitcoin.

If you want to mine bitcoin, you'll need specialized ASIC equipment.

The cooling itself depends several factors.
As DannyHammilton already mentioned, it is not profitable to mine BTC with a computer.
This doesn't only apply to BTC but also to a lot of other altcoins which have a quite high hashrate.

Regarding ASICs, the cooling at least depends on:

• the amount of asics you have running
• the amount of space between your asics (where air can circulate)
• your ambient temperature

You'll at least need some fans to cool a mining rig. Without any cooling the devices will have a notable shorter lifetime.

We have discussed a lot of related topics from newbies "getting-in" to cryptocurrency there.

As for the cooling, your build (a typical computer) will be fine with the usual system fan and the stock GPU fan, nothing more.
Rigs built with Multiple GPUs (Mining Rigs) are often cooled based on its room and location, from regular fans to industrial grade high-rpm exhaust fans to specialized "tents".

Go to the Altcoin Mining board and try to search for those kind of topics (and/or move this thread there).

I'm getting an Antminer V9 soon. I just refer to them as "computers" sorry if that's unclear. But will just the one in my air-conditioned house be fine? Or will I need a whole cooling rig? Bitmain says that it runs at a high of 40c or a little over 100f. Will it overheat without a special cooling setup?   Again, sorry that I didn't say it was an ASIC, haha.

You can run one in your house, it will get a lot warmer, but probably not overheat.

However, they are _VERY_ loud.  Your family might leave.

Oh no! Could you give an example or maybe a link to a video of one running, please? I don't want it to be a disturbance! Also, is that a definite that it won't overheat, or just if I'm lucky? What are the chances the in my home in Phoenix, Arizona during the peak of summer it might overheat? Thanks for all your help, by the way!

A friend has 2, it's like an airplane taking off 
Heat can be controlled, since the house has ac as you stated. ( if you install 10, it will be another story or a very high AC bill  )

The most issue with ASICs is heat and noise. Maybe you should build a DIY soundproof box (for one only ASIC) and add some DIY cooling systems, you can use Peltier for a small cooling system.

Worst case scenario isn't failing to disperse the heat (those have really fast RPM), but Bitmain's shipping service.
They may send you a completely worn-out unit [yes, most of them were already used (for testing?)] or a Defective one which will take forever to RMA.

The noise of S9's fans are quite higher pitched than the old S7 Antminers, but both are really annoying.
If that's the case, you will be forced to pick one Antminer S9 or your wife?

Okay thanks. So with just the one it'd be pretty loud, but the heat is easily controlled, right? From what I've heard from other people, the noise is the only real problem with having just one in your home. I've seen some videos on noise reduction and cooling in a sound-proof box.  I'll be closing this thread now, thank you for all of your (such quick) answers!
