major analogy time. seeing as the OP brought up the "empire" analogy. legs start with that
imagine in 2009 there was a british empire. that had one currency, that everyone on many continents agreed was one currency network/medium of exchange called the dollar for years one network. many communities, many maintainers of record and many rule lobbyists

.. then came the civil war fo 2017. instead of democracy they decided to over throw the rule of law and democracy and go independant. to go their separate ways

now although these ex empire currencies proclaim they both have history going back to the british empire to use the dollar. they both have different populations that value the dollar within their new communities at different rates. and so because they are now no longer part of the original empire and both differ.. neither can make claim to being sole owner of the dollar. and thus have to clarify which community currency they are using/trading
for instance
america has to communicate its USD  (core has to comunicate its btc)
australia has to communicate its  AUD (cash has to comunicate its bch)
if core keep trying to proclaim they are just "bitcoin". then they are being hypocritical and literally centralising things to only one community. rather than remain decentralised. thus they are confusing the issue.

anyone attacking cash but not attacking cores hypocrisy. dont care about decentralisation and instead want centralisation in the form of a core monarchy

there is no "bitcoin core" to be BTC. there is only bitcoin which is BTC and then there is bitcoin-cash (an altcoin) which is BCH. stop using the word "bitcoin core" because it doesn't mean what you think it means! bitcoin core is the client (the wallet, node,...) not the currency.

There really is no need for coming up with forced analogies and creative ideas like bilateral split etc etc. Only one Bitcoin is needed. If you want to trade or buy it, then go for the BTC ticker.

This constant distraction about bitcoin being a well-defined, objective idea that should only follow the whitepaper as a bible is absurd. The community project that was handed down by Satoshi has SegWit implemented in it's current form. It is the network, the community and the individuals world over who value and identify the historical transaction database associated with the BTC chain with Bitcoin Core being the main client/ software. That is sufficient to identify Bitcoin.

Doesn't change the fact that Bitcoin Cash is an alt-coin and these marketing tactics are just a dirty businessman's game. These people have done everything from misleading newbies through their owned platforms to manipulatively pumping it during crucial events.

Today if somebody were to start another chain fully compliant with the original code devoid of all the BIPs and start calling it the the "Bitcoin Vintage", it won't be bitcoin. Bitcoin Is. That's it.

Roger Ver and his fanboys are just playing desperate word games to survive. The real reason for all of these games are bigger profit. They will pump BCash to a ATH and then they will dump it, like they did with Bitcoin. Most of these people sold their Bitcoin <BTC> at the ATH of $18 000+ and now they want to do this again with BCash.

At some stage in the future these BCash pumpers will find some excuse to fork away from BCash and they will start pumping a new coin.

Roger Ver just wanted to capitalize on Bitcoin Cash and make himself and a few other billionaires more richer. This is a simple fact. Bitcoin is Bitcoin and that is that. Everything else, including all the forked Bitcoin clones are forks and altcoins. Just because he was one of the old Bitcoin developers, it does not mean that he can just come out and trash the original Bitcoin because he is greedy and wants to make a killing. Has he not made enough money already and now wants us all to believe in his lies? If I want to purchase BITCOIN CASH I will, but not because Roger Ver says so.

If Bitcoin Cash is the real Bitcoin, why does it need to be forked out of the Bitcoin we are using right now. Since it is a product of forking, it is an obvious fact that Bitcoin Cash is just an altcoin forked out of the real Bitcoin. It might be the digital currency envisioned by the Creator of Bitcoin which is Satoshi Nakamoto but it did not happen and the real Bitcoin is what we are using and not Bitcoin Cash.
