Hey all 

So I've decided I'm going to throw my hat into the ring as it were and invest in some mining equipment. If only I had done it sooner, well, I'm sure most of us are in that boat. Picked up 3x Sapphire r9 290's and the other necessary items and am building my own setup using plastic bins. Sadly, that venture has been more work than I had assumed. Still waiting for my risers so only have 2 of the cards running right now. After some missteps, I finally got cgminer running at approx. 750khz/per card with next to no optimization. Going to wait to get all 3 running before really locking down and getting best possible speeds. Hope I can also remedy my issue of system crashes upon closing cgminer. Any tips?

Anyway, I'm running on [Suspicious link removed] right now and the stratum is down or whatever. I've been lurking, never had an account, and found I can't just up and reply in the topic. That brings me here, trying to get posting rights as it were.

cgminer sometimes crash when you stress your GPU too much, try to not overclock your card too much

That's just it. My system is stable the entire time cgminer is actually running. It's just when I close it that my pc crashes. Also, the cards are running @ stock speeds, processor and memory. I am pushing them pretty hard though I guess. They aren't getting all that hot, at least not as hot as some posts I read suggest is safe. I'm in the 74-80c range or so. It helps it's so stinking cold out.

I'm a newbie too, and haven't yet made the jump to building my own mining rig, but I'm interested to hear how everything goes for you. If you discover any interesting tips or tricks, be sure to let us know (or not, if you want to keep your competitive advantage!)

Uh oh, just noticed the "[suspicious link removed]" tag in my original post. Hope I didn't break any rules. I found that pool on this site in fact and actually didn't have any intention of advertising it. Oh well, hope I didn't draw too much negative attention 

Otherwise, thanks for the welcoming words all. And naw, I'm not going in with a competitive mindset. There's enough coins for everyone lol. I've never been the type to push others down on my way to the top. That's just one of the many ways to end up living a miserable life IMO.

Wow that's an impressive rig you're setting up!
I started gpu mining btc last june (just for fun since it was already quite unprofitable) then switched to ltc - right now even with a single 7950 I can get decent amount of coins per month.
I've got my amount of HW errors too with LTC mining, it's quite configuration sensible... you have just to experiment with the different options and try to get a working one. Personally, I prefer to keep it a bit on the low kH side and get a stable system so I don't have to check it every hour...
