Paypal fell victim to the classic Innovator's Dilemma with this one. By all accounts Paypal should have been the company to launch something like bitcoin, but they got caught snoozing, protecting their sacred cows instead of looking into the future, and now they're about to be majorly disrupted, and likely put outta business, by Satoshi's creation -- one guy in a garage in this case.

Wow! Amazing news. Looks like Paypal's finally offering that missing link, a dual-currency (BTC-fiat) debit card! Let's hope that changes by 2014 or 2015. Bitcoins linked to Paypal, Ebay and Amazon = huge step forward for adoption, increase in bitcoin's use, more fiat coming into btc and btc value increasing substantially to support the larger market share. My fingers are crossed PayPal will not offer Bitcoin in my opinion, too much risk stolen account will be emptied to bitcoin easily and paypal would not be able to do anything to recover the stolen funds |

PayPal already handles multiple currencies, including exchanging between them. Bitcoin could easily be just another currency for them.

Although I guess that Paypal would be acting as the exchange in the middle it still feels like you would be introducing a 3rd party to oversee transactions on a payment system that is specifically designed to remove the 3rd party. Bitcoin transactions should in theory always be cheaper than any other and this wouldn't be.
Seems like there would be a lot of negatives for Paypal in administering this. A more lucrative option might be for them to introduce PayPalCoin, a new Bitcoin clone that they could float and make a tidy sum from. You can trade your Bitcoins for PayPalcoins as needed and let them sit in a Paypal wallet for your ebay purchases.
