**I would rather post this in a more relevant area, but apparently this is the only area i'm allowed to post in**

I followed this guide to build my first scrypt mining rig:

http://www.cryptobadger.com/2013/04/build-a-litecoin-mining-rig-linux/

I'm currently getting only about 550 kH/s per card (for scrypt mining) under the following conditions.

cgminer 3.7.2

./cgminer --scrypt -I 13 -g 2 -w 256 --shaders 2048 --gpu-powertune 20 --thread-concurrency 8192 -o stratum+tcp://xxxxxxx -u xxxxxxxx --no-submit-stale

I know a substantial increase is possible because a member here, glitchboy, reported getting 750 kH/s with the same card:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=343226.msg3683234#msg3683234

Could anyone here help me figure out what I'm missing?

You need to adjust your gpu/memory clock to obtain a higher hash rate. The optimal values are unique to your setup, but generally the gpu clock is between 1000-1100mhz and the memory is 1500mhz. Check your rates with the following settings.

--gpu-engine 1015 --gpu-memclock 1500
--gpu-engine 1040 --gpu-memclock 1500
--gpu-engine 1080 --gpu-memclock 1500

I tried all the above settings and only reached a max of 580kH/s.  This card seems to be unlike other r9 280x's.  Today I had a little more time to play around and ended up with the best (for me) results using:

./cgminer --scrypt -I 20 --gpu-engine 1050 --gpu-memclock 1500

This gives me 660kH/s

I would like to get up to 700kH/s but I'm out of ideas because all the other tuning guides for 7970 and 280x seem to decrease my performance substantially.  Changing memory speeds at all decreases performance so I'm not sure what else I can do.

Any ideas?

hi,

I did this few days ago... try to inrease trhead concurency to 27000. I foud this somewhere on goole and now Im getting about 750kH (with default clock I think). I can post whole config, but Im not at the computer now...

I also found that someone was usin thead concurency abou 33000 to get about 900kH, but with such high value cgminer reports that gpu failed or something like that and it doesnt mine. I dot have much time to play whit that, but I tried to set it to something between 25000 and 29000 but it was not as good as with 27000.

Are you usig windows or linux as OS? Because I was unabel to get cgminer to see GPU even if drivers & sdk installed, cgminer compiled with opencl support without errors, ... glinfo also shows only cpu... on windows it works as I described above.

hope this helps you, lucky mining!

JAH bless you.

I've tried several settings for thread concurrency the highest I can get it to go is about 22272.

Could you post your whole config?

Thanks

Also,  as an update I am now able to get peak hashes of about 710 kH/s.  The hashrate is pretty inconsistent though and will jump around between 703 and 640 while momentarily peaking at ~710 or dipping to ~620.  Overall this leaves me with an average of about ~650 kH/s

-g 2 -w 256 -I 20 --lookup-gap 2 --thread-concurrency 22270 --gpu-engine 1045

You need to over clock your memory too. See if you can get it to 1700 on the mem. Or as high as you can. So something like 1050+/1700.

If you can do that then you should be able to run in the 700's using:

/cgminer --scrypt -I 13 -g 2 -w 256 --gpu-engine 1050 --gpu-memclock 1700 --gpu-powertune 20 --thread-concurrency 8192 -o stratum+tcp://xxxxxxx -u xxxxxxxx --no-submit-stale

Or alternatively you could try this for -I 20 -g 1:

/cgminer --scrypt -I 20 -g 1 -w 256 --gpu-engine 1050 --gpu-memclock 1700 --gpu-powertune 20 --thread-concurrency 22400 -o stratum+tcp://xxxxxxx -u xxxxxxxx --no-submit-stale

I'm also considering to mine with 3 R9 290X's. How many KH/s can you reach with your settings?  Smiley

This thread is for the 280x

For the 290x you could use:

/cgminer --scrypt -I 20 -g 1 -w 512 --gpu-engine 900 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-powertune 20 --thread-concurrency 32765 -o stratum+tcp://xxxxxxx -u xxxxxxxx --no-submit-stale

That should get you 800+

@Yingminer This mining rig looks like it needs to be configured correctly anyways you should use the "mining" section.

Its all about configuration. I have 3 r9 280x rig setup in a rig. Followed the same configuration you provided.

I am getting about 750kh/s for each GPU.

my configuration is :

cgminer(3.7.2)

cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://stratum2.xxxxx.com:333x -u x.2 -p x -I 13 -w 256 -g 2 --thread-concurrency 8192 --gpu-engine 1070 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-vddc 1.087 --temp-target 80 --auto-fan --failover-only -o us.wemineltc.com:80 -u x.2 -p x

Good luck

It can take time to configure these first time. Be patient, lots of trial and error and you will get there.

Also check which firmware you have and what other people are using for that card. I had a 2x 7970's working at 730kh/s and added a 3rd into my rig but would only get 350-400kh/s. Turned out to be the firmware causing the low hash rates. So i flashed the card, restarted and now getting the exact same hash's as the other 2 cards.

Update:

I must be a linux noob.  I tried windows on a whim and now I get stead a steady 745 kH/s.  I've seen it go higher but I don't dare push it considering one of my three cards is bordering 90 deg C.  I'll tinker some more when I get a better cooling solution.

Windows 8.1 x64
Catalyst 13.11 beta 9.5
SDK 2.7

-I 13 -g 2 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-engine 1070 --gpu-memclock 1500 --thread-concurrency 8192

A couple observations:

For some reason windows only needs one dummy plug for all three cards and the cards hash about 10 kH/s faster without them.

This has been a great learning experience.

Thank you for all your input
