How about Datacoin?

And what's the deal with Quarkcoin?  It's fast and has CPU mining?

Mastercoin (MSC), the best of the lot, but not really an 'altcoin.' It's a protocol layer on top of the bitcoin network.

Doubtful---blockchain growth of up to 513 GB per year.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=325735.0

It seems to be a slow and expensive means of accomplishing something that is currently cheap and quick.

It has not held up to basic scrutiny:

are you kidding? MSC is still in development; the criticism is premature. Issues were with the explorers, not protocol. The guy that wrote that comment is developing an alternative to MSC, but doesn't have the funds MSC has -- about $5 million. Developers are being hired; wallets and distributed exchange will come out soon.

Can it be purchased like normal altcoins?  If so, on which exchange?

I don't understand the draw here.  Where is the potential?
