I want to get rid of my iphone. What do people suggest as a replacement? I Was a bug Nokia fan back in the day, but haven't had one for years.

Stop focusing on the brand and start looking at the operative system and the hardware.

I never said I was focusing on brand. I just asked for suggestions for alternatives to iPhones.

I said this because Nokia smartphones have Windows Phone OS, while most other smartphones have Android, and apple smartphones have iOS. So if you get a nokia you won't have the same OS you would have by buying for example a Galaxy S-something

What are the biggest differences between Windows and Android, or pros and cons if you know of any? I've not even used a smartphone other than Iphone, so I have no idea how they compare.

I've never understood why Apple fanboys and fangirls, love being denied and told what they can do and cannot do.
It's like Apple fanboys and girls love the abuse from a big corporation, they just can't get enough of the abuse and worst of all they are willing to pay a premium just to be part of the cult.

I got an iPad from my work and I hate the damn thing. No SD slot, can't do this , can't do that on it. Ooops, sorry that App is not available for iPad because the Apple god banned it.  Ridiculous.  And got to do everything through iTunes where they can track everything you do.

I have a personal Android tablet, that kills the iPad in everyway, in terms of freedom to install, copy and view my own media. Why be limited because a corporation wants to extract more money out of you.

It is not surprising that Apple is banning Bitcoins or alt coins from IOS apps. 

People should stand for it, boycott Apple product...it's all hype.

I disagree with the main ideas behind this thread.

First of all, I have an iPhone.  I have a Blockchain.info app, multiple ticker apps and portfolio apps, an app for monitoring my miners, multiple BTC news apps, and even a mobile miner.  This is way the fuck more than I need on a phone.

I've never used any other type of smartphone, and it's true that this means an iPhone 4 is my only reference point for smartphones.  But, it's good enough for myself and apparently millions of others.  It's kind of like how certain alt-coins are, almost hands down, superior crypto-currencies, but Bitcoin is good enough.  I can even imagine buying a different phone and liking it more, but that goes for just about anything (clothes, cars, etc.) and at some point you realize that sacrificing freedom for simplicity is preferable in some cases.  One of Bitcoin's unmentioned assumptions is that people will actually prefer more personal responsibility.

Having a good idea that works for everyone is better than the best idea that works only for some in this case.  If the rise of a currency is dependent upon the failure of businesses, then that's a pretty awful currency.

probably not a good time to buy a new phone, as the more popular models are kind of around the corner. i really like the HTC one though, along with the galaxy s4. i'd choose the htc one right now though.

I am sorta over apple a  bit in relation to the Iphone, the screen size for one....and this anti btc stance, well it seems draconian, I mean there's no regulation/law against view info about BTC through the apps, yet the app store kicks some of even them off.

Also I note that the Iphone looses randomly data in the sync process, (and always the important file) as it seems to have different rules for what updates what.

I almost feel were back in 1984 - 1990 where apple lost it market share to wintel. Now Apple is looseing market share to  GoogSung, (or RoidSam if you prefer) and they sorta haven learnt from last time. Im mean thats ok they make more margin per device and the whole ecology thing does mean it just works alot of the time, but they have some systemic floors. Eg my MPB can fry and egg over the power cable /logic board area, and what I had to do to get actual >dual boot (tri-boot) and with more than two partions, and not use bootcamp was insane.

that's the thing.. they have so many loyal users that they need not worry about repercussions of their actions. they can ban it now, try to do what they want with it, and then if it backfires.. allow back into their market.

It would be nice if that happened but everyone around the world seems to want their iDevice so that they can play in the walled garden. The brand is still strong.

It would be really difficult to convince a fairly large group of professional creatives that they no longer want apple.  It does in fact make sense for graphic design and architecture etc to have a strongly restricted set of tools they use to work.

I've been hanging on to my ipad mini because it has truly excellent battery life and I do a lot of long flights. But I'm just growing weary as fuck of ios. It will go eBay tomorrow. Phone-wise, I dumped the 4s for the Note a couple of years back and I couldn't ever go back to that shitty little screen.

Talking of wallets that apple doesn't support, I've been playing with mycelium the last couple of weeks and I'm really impressed. Walmart has a decent looking samsung cricket phone on sale for $50 running 4.x. I'm thinking about buying a couple to use as dedicated cold storage devices. Anyone have any thoughts as to whether this is a good idea? I'm guessing the wifi will give me internet access if needed, even though I don't have cricket service.

I have to agree with the OP and call for the Bitcoin community to boycott Apple, particularly IOS; however I must say this boycott needs to be extended also to Windows Phone / Windows RT. Apple has indeed become Big Brother and IOS platform has effectively become the telescreen of the 21st century. Microsoft with Windows 8 RT / Windows phone has decided to emulate Apple here is currently little brother. The boycott needs also to be applied also against Windows 8 RT / Windows phone to prevent this little brother from becoming another Big Brother. The fundamental problem lies with the requirement that only software obtained from an authorised store may be installed on these devices. The crucial difference with Android is that end users on Android can elect to allow the installation of applications from out side the Android Market / Play Store on their devices.

We must first consider that when Satoshi developed Bitcoin a critical assumption was made in that the end user of a computing device would have complete control over the computing device. This assumption is still for the most part correct on the desktop / laptop platforms (although it is currently being eroded by Apple and Microsoft) but is far from the case on mobile. This is critical for the security of Bitcoin. Furthermore what exactly is the point of eliminating the banks as third parties in financial transactions if the vendor of the operating system becomes the all controlling third party?

The history of the IOS platform is literally one of censorship and oppression. Bitcoin is only a very recent addition to the Apple censorship list. To understand how pervasive Apple censorship has become one only needs to search for Apple Censorship. Should the boycott also apply to the desktop version Max OS X? Given Apple's commercial success with IOS the temptation of extending it to the desktop may simply be to great in the future.

But what about Microsoft? Windows 8 RT has thankfully turned out to be a dud in the marketplace largely because of the locked bootloader and the requirement that only applications obtained from the approved store may be installed on Windows 8 RT. The has led to a close to 1 billion USD loss for Microsoft on Windows 8 RT devices. The best solution is Operating Systems that are Free Libre Open Source Software. GNU/Linux, Android, Free BSD  etc. If the operating system contains GPL V3 code, as is currently the case with GNU/Linux but not with Android, then this provides protection against a locked bootloader. For this reason in the case of Android it is very important to first verify that one can “root” the device before purchase.

Some will say that Bitcoin needing for certain business models to fail, is a negative aspect of Bitcoin. The reality is that at a very fundamental level Bitcoin is incompatible with censorship, oppression, the suppression of free speech, the suppression of civil liberties, in fact the suppression of most basic human rights. If a particular business model depends on censorship, oppression, the suppression of free speech, the suppression of civil liberties, the suppression of any of the most basic human rights then it needs to fail, for far more important reasons than Bitcoin. If Bitcoin helps bring it down then this must be considered a feature and not a flaw of Bitcoin.

I can understand why some people feel so strongly about Apple (well I think I do) but as a professional film editor who relies on Final Cut Pro X (10) to do my video editing/special effects work as the software that gave me the best results (in my case) is all mac only so I have to buy Apple whether I like it or not as I simply can't find feasible alternatives in the PC world so MacBook Pro with Retina display it is for me (plus they're good machines in my case).

Are you saying OP,that people in my case should abandon my MacBook Pro regardless of what is best for the work that I do?As I'm rather puzzled with what you're actually trying to say.

I have an android phone as I can pay for stuff in the real world with my phones NFC wallet (EEs Cash on tap feature+NFC SIM card installed onto phone) as I value having freedom from carrying coins/cash/cards around as they can be lost/stolen more easily.

It's much easier to focus on keeping one thing safe (my phone that does it all) than it is to keep an eye on everything else you carry (wallet,keys,charger,backpack,sunglasses,etc) in my case.
