I have been using a linux machine from 2011 for work with the following specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
MB: Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A88TDV_EVOUSB3/
RAM: PNY Optima 8gb (2x4GB) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178333
PSU: Corsair tx650W

It seems the greatest factor for profiting from mining is the electrical cost, but I just moved into a place where utility costs are included in rent. It seems the AMD 7970 and R9 280x are the two most recommended GPUs, and I'm wondering what would be the best way to spend a $1500 budget to convert my machine into a full-time mining rig. I'm interested in getting the best bang for buck in terms of SHA and scrypt mining.

edit: I just realized the MB is crossfire ready. Would two 7970s be adequate to get started?

I appreciate any advice and guidance.
