Hey man as a consumer just starting up, I strongly advise you to mine scrypt. And if you do,use AMD GPUs. BTC mining is solely in the realm of elite asics now and unfortunately scrypt may head that way soon also.

The usb miner will draw the power it needs directly from the port in which it is plugged. They only draw a couple of watts, so there isn't too much of a concern in supplying enough power. However, be careful which usb miner you would buy as some require the additional power from usb 3.0. If you only have usb 2.0 available, you'll need to look for something that doesn't exceed 500mA. I haven't kept up with all the specs of the different usb miners, so you'll just have to verify the power consumption on the miner you're looking at. There is no loss from adding additional miners; so yes, if you had 2 that each did 2.7 Gh, then you'd have a total of 5.4 Gh. Generally speaking, the standard unit of measure for BTC is currently in Gh/s, but that will be changing in the coming months to Th/s. For scrypt mining, such as LTC, the standard unit of measure is an order or two of magnitude back. One video card, for example, will mine in the Kh/s range while someone with even a couple GPUs will be bumped up to Mh/s. It all depends upon what currency you'd like to mine. Those usb miners will only work on sha256 protocols, but if you're calculating for hash speed in the kh/s range, you must be asking about mining with a GPU on scrypt...?

BTC has definitely gone pro when it comes to mining. There is absolutely no profit to gain by building your own rig unless you are ready to invest a large amount of dollars to invest in pro equipment and rent to warehouse to keep the gear. Even with pro gear you need make sure 24/7 that the gear is performing optimum, since the margin for profit with BTC mining are very slim, the difficult estimation in 3-4 month basis is also extremely hard to predict.
However when it comes to LTC, then is there still opportunities to make a profit. But you have to carefully make a business plan and budget before you start, here are some key areas:
- What equipment to buy, obvoustly it must be a AMD GPU's, find a good deal for your budget. - Where to store the rig, you wife WILL NOT be happy about the rig in the bedroom. - What is the electricity cost, they should be deducted from your monthly profit. - Make a budget, and make a conservative estimation of the difficulty change over the next 6 month. - How much can you sell your gear for, e.g. after 6 month.
If your budget gives black numbers, then are you ready to go and invest in your GPU's, get them up running asap, time to market are crucial. If the numbers are red, then are you properly better of just buying the LTC.

Sorry, but the information from the other person on that other site was incorrect. At the moment, you cannot purchase any usb scrypt miners. The Blue Fury (ASIC) miner you have linked to on amazon is for Bitcoin only; or sha256 more specifically. You simply can't make that miner work on a different protocol as ASIC chips are hard coded to work on one instruction set. They're not reprogrammable, so the algorithm they are designed for initially, sha256 in this case, is the only use it will provide.
If you want to mine scrypt coins, like Galaxycoin; Litecoin; Grandcoin; any of them on that list you linked to, you will only be able to mine them using a GPU. USB miners will not be capable of mining those coins - for now. It has been announced that sometime in early 2014, we will have ASICs for scrypt, but we're not quite there yet.

Dont be so pessimistic, I will believe it only when I see it. Preorders are scam, ignore preorders

I can't say from experience, but I would expect that card to get closer to at least 600-650 Kh/s on scrypt. Your calculations should look more like this: http://goo.gl/7gdf2BPower consumption will be about 250 watts; Looks like the card is retailing for $400; I included a 2% pool fee if you mine with a pool - this will vary with pool choice, though with Spots, I don't even know if there are pools or if it is only solo mining I left the power cost at .21$/kWh - you'll need to adjust that according to what you pay if i correctly understand from this website i can mine 1BTC in 27,01days?? That would be how long you've mined the equivalent of 1 BTC in Spots at the current exchange rate. That could certainly change with any changes in price for either coin.

Yep, that motherboard will work just fine. better to mine in pool or just solo??
That all depends upon which coin you'll be mining; the difficulty level and the availability of pools for that coin. You can choose to solo mine any coin, but the higher the difficulty, the more luck required to find a block. I've heard that solo mining is not very feasible if you have less than 1% of the entire network hashrate. However, some coins may not even have any pools setup, so you'll be required to solo mine. Once you decide which coin you'd like to try, look through the Alt-coin sub-forum to see if anyone has setup a pool for it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=67.0

I was mistaken, sorry, I tried mining a few spots to see the hash rate, but I forgot to set the intensity up, so my hash rate was ridiculous low.
What pool are you planing on using?

Yeah, that should not be a problem. I run mine on a corsair GS600. Look at this one, if you not already know it, good for comparing cards, and some of them have powerspecs too: https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison
