This page is good too if you are planning in investing in gear:
http://bitcoinwisdom.com/litecoin/calculator

Edit: Just remember that GPU mining is another game than bitcoin asic mining, since the GPU still have some value when then can not generate a profit in respect to electricity cost, then can the cards be sold used, and if you have already reached ROI by mining, then is the sell all profit.

Cryptography is one of the few things you can truly trust.

I cannot say anything about spots, I have absolutely no experience in that.
I tried spot for 30 min, when I saw this thread, i could not mine anything descent.

There are many variables to take into consideration.
1. How much time will it take get the gear up running.
2. Can the gear run 24/7? (dont take it for granted that you can plug it in, and then it will run for 31 days, without some kind of tweeking).
3. How much the gear cost.
4. The electricity cost.
5. The difficult change.
6. The exhange rate on the scrypt you are mining.

If you can earn 1 BTC in one month with a 200-300 dollar investment, then would I say that you have found a sweet "spot".

Remember investment is always the game of risk, there are no sure thing and absolutely no guarantees.
You have to evaluate the risk vs. the opportunity for profit yourself, before making an investment.

Better to use some stable currencies for planning profit.
For example, begin from LiteCoin.
http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/litecoin-mining-calculator/?h=1000.00&p=500.00&pc=0.21&pf=1&d=2926.50971494&r=50.00000000&er=0.03476000&hc=400
It's your more predictable profit for next month.
After what, you can try something like WorldCoin. Also looks stable now.
http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/worldcoin-mining-calculator/?h=1000.00&p=500.00&pc=0.10&pf=0.00&d=43.51582338&r=55.59973207&er=0.00070002&hc=400

So, you have good chance to earn about $300 to $500 next month with your card.
And, I think, it's also great opportunity.
Don't look at most profitable coins. It can be not correct calculations. And even if it happen - this happen for 1-3 days, later profitability will return to the Litecoin +- 30%.

Also remember, as another members noticed already. LiteCoin price is skyrocketed from 2 to 30 USD in 1 month. Thats why is so profitable now to mine scrypt coins.
But next months it can return back or difficulty increase and you will get 50 - 100 USD / month with your card.

I pretty much agree with all of this.

It is much better to budget with something stable like LTC.
More reasons:
LTC is well establish, the p2p network are extensive, software is mature (e.g. litecoin-qt). With prototype coins, expect problems with everything, even to transfer the coin from your wallet to the exchange bay.
There are many mining pools, the top5 are very stable, almost no downtime and great monitor interface.

Once you got the setup working and you got some experience with mining, then can you try to take your miner offline at try out some other coins.

5.i know that difficult can change Wink)
i know that guarantees can change don't worry Wink)

The 1 BTC / month you have estimated was based on a spot diff ~ 2.3

Look at the spot difficulty chart the last 3 days:
http://www.coinwarz.com/difficulty-charts/spots-difficulty-chart

Try recalculate your budget Wink

Yes if you are mining spots with 500 KH/s and:
Electricity cost are $0.
Difficulty stay at 2.3
Your gear works 24/7
Your pool has 0% fee
Your pool has zero pool downtime.
The exchange rate for spots down go down.
ect.

electricity cost are not $0 from a net point of view.
However some countries has electricity included in the rent, also it is not unusual that student flats, dormitories ect has electricity included in the rent.

Personally I will go for the HD 7950, because of the availability where I live, you can find it used for a good price.

However I see many "pro-miners" use R290x, R280x, R270x.

I think both are good miner-cards, go for the cheapest you can get your hand on.

Good luck - happy mining  Grin
