Starting a pool, how can I rate my server's capabilities so it doesn't buckle?

Hey all,

So my friend and I are starting a pool and considering opening it to the public. I've been trying to figure out how server intensive mining is so we don't buckle.

Is there a typical hardware / bandwidth usage per mhash, or does it really just depend on how the pool is coded?
