Saving my wallet data with MultiBit

I plan on storing my bitcoin wallet data on a USB stick. I understand MultiBit has Multibit.wallet , but what if MultiBit isnt around anymore? Does my wallet become redundant?

I think it would be quite hard for all copies of multibit to forever be erased from the face of the earth.  You can also just export your private keys if you're really worried about it.
