I'm not convinced all publicity is good. Publicity can also turn something into a public joke.

As part of her live performance, she held up a picture of the Pope, said “Fight the real enemy!” and then tore the picture (the action was a reference to the child sex abuse scandals then being experienced by the Catholic church).  The backlash was severe, and her career was basically destroyed.
