btw ninja, find the model number for the card and post it up.

xfx 5870 reference cards are worth more than the non-reference ones

LOL nice pic.     Grin

My 5870 is not reference. Box says HD-587X-ZN Ver 1.2.

Why do reference sell for more?

Because reference can be unlocked to get more power out of them.

You mean the volts arent locked yes? The reference coolers are garbage tho. You cant really give it more volts cause the coolers cant handle it. Personally I would rather have an improved cooler than unlock volts.

actuallly reference cards have better coolers because the fans are at the end of the card instead of the middle.

they actually work to cool the card when you have 4 stacked in the same case. (refer to my thread for photos on my reference 5870s)

Hmm, Im not sure Im convinced of that yet. The GPU is in the center of the PCB board. I would assume the fan being directly over the GPU would be better than a fan at the end of the card.

Also, if the reference cards have better coolers why would they swap them with less efficient coolers? That doesnt make any sense. Any revisions should be a step forward not backwards.

in most situations, non-reference is preferred. it will cool better at a lower noise. the only time you'd prefer a reference card is when you stack 4 of them on a motherboard inside a case. this is because most of the heat will get exhausted outside of the case for reference cards, but non-ref cards shoot the heat everywhere. in an open case or test bench setup, this doesn't matter, but inside a high density case, it will

How would cooler be better when its not on top of the GPU?

the position of the fan relative to the GPU die doesn't matter. there's a copper base and/or heatpipes that direct the heat to wherever the fan is. the heat exhaust ill be blown in the opposite direction of the fan. if the fan is in the middle, it'll just blow heat in all directions. you'd want some kind of directional airflow, but these kinds of coolers/fans are "centrifuge" type coolers, which are a bit loud

Well, worth a try anyways.. I've had ebay sellers accept best offers of 10-20% the buy price before.
