Which is the best and most reliable exchange to trade BTC for XRP (Ripple)?

There are 4 English exchanges listed for buying Ripple:

http://www.xrpga.org/exchangers.html

https://xrptrader.com : English : XRP, BTC
https://justcoin.com : English, Spanish, Norwegian : XRP, BTC, LTC, NOK
https://technocashier.com/ : English, Russian : XRP, WMZ, EUR, RUB, BTC
http://www.ripplewise.com/ : English : XRP, BTC, USD

But xrptrader.com is offline which worries me.  Is there a particularly reliable one in the bunch?

You can just buy XRP for Bitcoin within ripple :-)
Whether the exchange rate is ok to you probably depends on the amount that you want to buy, though.

I created a wallet on ripple.com but it only tells me "You have to be online to see this screen".  What am I doing wrong?

Don't know - I suspect a browser or networking (firewall) issue.
If you use Internet Explorer you should switch to a really recent version or another browser (firefox or chrome).
Don't know whether internet explorer is properly supported, the Ripple client uses websockets which might not work properly in IE.

Thanks, it was a browser issue.  I'm using Justcoin as the gateway and waiting for the deposit to credit there.

Which is the best and most reliable exchange to trade BTC for XRP (Ripple)?

I have had success Bitstamp and Justcoin for BTC to XRP.

I have used TheRockTrading, Snapswap and Bitstamp for USD to XRP.

(I've just been testing all the gateways I can for the fun of it ;-)

And...with the Ripple/BTC bridge, you can exchange the two of them inside of the Ripple system

Cheers!

How?  Are you saying I can send bitcoin from a bitcoin wallet direct to my ripple account?

How?  Are you saying I can send bitcoin from a bitcoin wallet direct to my ripple account?

Not directly, but going through a gateway.
All external currencies in Ripple (fiat or crypto) are actually stored at gateways, the ripple ledger only stores who controls which amounts of these.
For example, to send BTC to Ripple via Bitstamp, you need a Bitstamp account where you send the BTC first. After that, you can withdraw the BTC to the Ripple, and use the BTC.Bitstamp within Ripple to trade against other currencies.
Alternatively, you can send BTC using dividendrippler.com which is a gateway that only holds crypto currencies.
Or you can deposit cash using zipzap and exchange that into BTC or whatever currency you want.

To withdraw money from Ripple, you need to go the reverse way. For BTC, there's a payment bridge operated by bitstamp which you can use to send BTC to any BTC wallet address.

I would choose Poloniex over Bitstamp all the time. I dont have a big stash of Ripple but I guess it will be of a good value in future.

Thanks to Onkel Paul for enlightening us with the knowledge.

Poloniex is the safest place that XRP can be purchased at. That's the only place that I can recommend because many people like to use Poloniex for Bitcoin/XRP trading.

I buy XRP on poloniex with BTC and leave them there, I do not want to open a wallet for every altcoin I buy because it probably will not hold for a long time

Poloniex is one of the best exchange where we can easily deposit Bitcoin and we can easily buy XRP. When compared to other exchanges I prefer only Poloniex for buying XRP coins.
