If you are new to mining, to fall in love with any coin. Most of them will die someday. So of course you could mine purely based on the difficulty, but it is way safer to mine the most profitable and autosell (maybe keeping a small percent).

Please stay away from NXT, RIPPLE and other not bitcoin alike crypto. These do not even follow the philosophy of cryptocurrency (especially Ripple, which is not decentralized).

also pool mining is a good way to start. I have bounced around and found fast-pool to be pretty good
