There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, which will follow the rules of the network no matter what miners do. Even if every miner decided to create 1000 bitcoins per block, full nodes would stick to the rules and reject those blocks.

If your Client is up and loaded the blockchain completly - wich takes a long time, some hours - often just some minutes, but sometimes longer, to confirm it takes a while.

It depends on if its send with fee or not. Some Experts in this Forum can give you more Details.

If you have the block chain up to date, the payments should appear almost instantly, but it takes time to confirm.

Shocking, obligatory charity code:

Free BTC every hour:

And why not free Bitcoins?

If you re-install bitcoin client and/or have to clear the files because they became corrupted you have to rebuild the block chain which as other uses said takes awhile.

If you just need to confirm if the transaction is sent or not, you can search for it on http://blockexplorer.com while you wait for your client to update.
