Hi all,

I'd to start by saying I'm happy to pay for service if someone knows how to fix this issue.

I had one of my S9's (13.5 TH)  plugged in to 1600W Rosewill PSU. It ran fine for about 4 months. At some point, there was what we are assuming was a power surge. The S9 stopped working.

I did some testing and found that the control board seemed to be the issue. I've gone ahead and replaced the control board. It works now - sort of.

Issues are as follows:

First, when I apply the the AUTO_FREQ fireware update, the hardware version on the system tab is blank and the hashboards do not turn on.

I can get the hash board and the device to turn on when I apply the 650m fixed frequency firmware. However,  when I go to the miner config tab and apply the Search Frequency From, it doesn't work. The hashboards turn off after a few seconds and the device resets.

I've updated everything else on the same tab and its mining but the temps are MUCH HIGHER than avg (99,92,95) this is in a room with normal temp (21 degree Celsius) and the fan speed shows as FAN3=1680 , Fan 4=1680 and Fan 6=  4,440.

I have 10 other machines and they dont nearly operate as hot as this ( they are in a room all together with the avg temp at 35 degrees)  and the fans only show 2 as operational fan3=6003 and fan6=4,440

I've attached my Kernel Log below. Please ADVISE. Thanks in advance.

I don't get the question  did the rosewill die?  Was the rosewill a tokamak titanium?

So I ask as I had 3 rosewill tokamak psu's die.

So lets assume the rosewill died and killed off your controller board.

the easy way to test is open the dead miner and pull the 3 boards.

open a good miner and pull the three boards.

Take 1  board from the dead  miner and put it in the good miner then see if the known good miner will run the one board.

If it does not run the board the board is damaged

if that board runs  take a second board from the dead miner  and run it with the good miner.

if that board works then 2 boards are good.

do it up to the three.

if all three run you need a replacement for the controller

myrig some times stocks them.

No it was not a tokamak. My Question is, how do i apply the correct firmware and get the S9 to behave normally.

No it was not a tokamak. My Question is, how do i apply the correct firmware and get the S9 to behave normally.

you go back and read  the rest of my post.

there is a huge chance the psu  fried the controller

and you need a new controller

there is a smaller chance the controller could be flashed if it is bad.

the third possibility is the psu damaged 1 board and the board needs repair

that is why I ask you to test the boards 1 by 1.

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to respond.  I really appreciate it.

A) I changed the board, I assumed that the was the first problem.
B) I then tested the hashboards one by one.
C) All the hashboards work.

To recap: The Fan does is not operating correctly and the hashboards are running hotter than normal. Every time I attempt to apply firmware, it does not hold. However, the S9 still operates, at a low fan speed and about 10 degrees hotter than normal.

What do you mean when you apply firmware it doesnt 'hold'?

WHen you fresh flash that auto tune firmware did you give it like 30 minutes to start hashing? They wont hash immediately on fresh firmware.

P.S. The hardware version being blank just means that bminer isnt running, its not a symptom of anything else.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

the fan speed shows as FAN3=1680 , Fan 4=1680 and Fan 6=  4,440.
You might need to replace whichever fan is being detected twice. You can check by booting with one fan plugged in at a time.

Or remove 1 fan from the end by taking out the 4 screws.  If they are both plugged in and attached one will have enough pressure to spin the other, especially if the exhaust fan is dead.  See if they are both spinning under their own power.

Lastly

Since you have a lot of s9s

Pull two good ones swap them to the weird controller.

If problem still there then the controller has a issue.

To confirm this take the fans from the weird controller put to the good controller

If they work you have some kind of controller issue

Fan 5 is decidedly bad, because it's a closed system without any added power the tach should read almost identical to fan 2. If it were closer to zero the system would error out and not begin hashing.

Then there's the bad asics on 7 & 8. CORE=1 asics are basically heaters. But they haven't totally screwed the pooch because they are still passing clock and data up and down the chain.
