when it comes to protecting yourself from scams/scam artists?

for me, i was 19.. and i was lured in by the charm of a snake oil salesman. he had a lot of charm and charisma, so i bought the "from rags to riches story." as it turned out, i ended up losing $450 (which is a lot to a 19 year old) and quickly learned what a pyramid scheme was.

over the years, i have had to learn how to ask questions to protect myself.

"Don't trust anyone" is the only foolproof rule to protect you from getting scammed. Doesn't work for the other party though.

it's amazing how some people could get burned time after time, yet they never learn.. and persist to commit the same mistakes they've made. i'm probably naturally gullible so i had to learn how to question everything.

I try to look at everything as a scam, until it's confirmed it isn't. Saves you from some trouble, that's for sure.

i think that then becomes a problem too. being neutral is probably the best, but i often tend to look at things as scams as well. being that cynical does have purposes, but it just makes you a much more negative thinker.

for example, i briefly told my uncle what bitcoin was.. and before gathering up enough information, he told me that it was a scam because "nothing could grow by that much." it's almost as if he lives in a bubble, and before making decisions.. he doesn't consider all of the pertinent facts.

Well, I find my way the only way not to get burned as I'm quite gullible unless I use the method mentioned before.

Well, in most cases, they (or we) are, sometimes we try to suppress it though, as it get in the way of making the right business decisions.

Yea, I tried to be friendly and explain to the x-ray machine guy how I use my FPGA for cryptography. Almost got myself detained.

An older and wiser friend of mine told me good business is seldom rushed, rushed business is seldom good.

I found it to be true time and time again. Every time I got scammed/got a bad deal, when I look back, it always felt rushed at the time.

If you feel that things are going too fast, it is best to walk away.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I've always been pretty weary of scams. Plus I've seen enough Hustle and The Real Hustle to know about all the guises they come in. The old adage if it's too good to be true, then it probably is is usually a good rule.

I've got a mate like this. He was always trying to get rich quick and was always getting scammed, even by his so called mates. I haven't seen him in about 6 months, but if I called him and told him about Bitcoins I could probably sell him some for a ridiculous price or flog him some shitcoin pretty easily.

Haha, well most of the time offers that are too good to be true are too good to be true, but there's always exceptions to the rule. One of my mates is very sceptical and he thought BTC was a scam at first, but I think I managed to talk him round.
