I am looking to buy a ASIC mining machine, to mine bitcoins and maybe even peercoins. Are either of these possible to make a profit on, or is the idea no longer viable, if so any idea of the likely profit?

Also can you recommend an ASIC machine at $2000 and $3000.

I really appreciate the help, thanks.

I would strongly recommend going with scrypt mining rather than SHA256 mining.

Its easier to mine scrypt alt coins than exchange them for LTC or BTC. Works out to be better return than just mining BTC with asics.

E.g. Dogecoin or Earthcoin (now). Mining around millions of coins per day with a $3k GPU mining rig. Easily dump them for $hundreds when it hits exchange. No way you will get those types of return for mining BTC. Especially when 2 ~ 3 THash machines are going to start shipping soon. Your asic will simply get eliminated by the amount of difficulty it will bring.

Mining is worth it if you go for altcoins as already mentioned, mining Bitcoin is way to "difficult" right now.

So would 4 r9 280x be a solid rig? I actually have 3 currently and could easily get another. By the way the CPU is not important, correct?

Also how do you feel about peercoin?

Thanks for all the help.

confirmed, scrypt mining seems to make me more than sha256 mining currently.

I just ordered some new scrypt stuff - 5x 270x's - 1300W PSU - mobo with 6 pci-e slots - crap AMD processor - 4gb ram - flash drive

Totaled out to around $1500 and should get 2mh/s easy.
