Oh, I forgot to mention that you can have all my PMs too. Every discussion I've had with everyone from Memory Dealers to MatthewNWright.

There's a reason they are called "private messages" ..... just saying ... the other parties might not be too happy

Yeah, I guess that's true. I shouldn't do it, but do you think it adds any value to the sale? lol

Depends on the content of the messages, lol ....
Sometimes people include their personal data in these. Let's say a mining hardware vendor sells his account - this could be worth a lot since you are getting names and addresses of all his buyers, think of the chaos   Lips sealed

Sorry but that's a bad idea in my opinion... This "practice" should be denied or avoided... As the "good member" you seem, you're giving a bad example! Peace! Smiley

True, but this information could be sold off the forum too. It doesn't have to be traded here. Many companies buy and sell email addresses and personal information to other companies.

And that practice is generally frowned upon and often illegal.

Obviously any trust built up during the life of one account will not transfer to another person because it would be common knowledge that the account is in different hands. Thank you for the offer! If the offer was serious that means accounts do have value for trade. Regrettably, I will have to decline.

Frowned upon - possibly. Illegal - no.  This is a personal social experiment for me. You will have to assume that I will do the right thing concerning the PMs.

Maybe that's the point I'm attempting to prove. A "good member", whatever that is, might disagree with the selling of accounts. One way to build support for or against a phenomena is to let people see it really happening instead of it being a hypothetical situation.

Ok, maybe it is somewhere. I'm not that well versed in the law surrounding the concept.

Many people who have joined the forum in the past few months are unaware and learning every day that trading accounts is not disallowed and that it sporadically occurs, so some may easily fall for a scam perpetrated with your account. I wouldn't mind spending 0.01 BTC to prevent that (but not more than that), and maybe as an experiment post for a while with it to see how many people would be aware of the sale of your account.

Fascinating. Your experimenting as much as I am. It may shock you to know that I don't agree with shill accounts. I actually agreed with Matthew's stance on that issue although I believe it cannot really be policed. I think the ASIC manufacturers have way too many of them. I was in the middle of an argument between Josh and Garr about a preorder and watched more shill accounts pop up during the argument than I could actually believe exists. This is an experiment for me. I am more interested in the interest in this action and the exercise than the money. I chose to only accept offers via PM for a reason. PM provides the opportunity to hide the transaction and transfer the account without general knowledge. Is this a plus? Will the potential buyer know that theymos and sirius can view PMs at will? I don't know. You are assuming that there is a price at which I would allow inappropriate action using this account. That may not be true.

It won't be common knowledge to all, only those in the know.

Maybe a scam or potential scam perpetrated by a respected member is what is needed to show how dangerous selling accounts is. And what's to stop a member scamming with their account then claiming innocence because they claimed they sold it?

We’re meant to be able to trust respected members who have built up feedback through trades etc, but to me, this trust is kind of worthless when people can just claim they've sold their account. Even involving a third party escrow service in deals now seems like just one other person involved that could scam you.

You want to know a few very trusted and well established hero members that have scammed in this community?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=35827

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=3046

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=67058

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=38455

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=16160

One of these scammers was a moderator for a long time, one was a worldwide spokesman for Bitcoin and another one was on the default trust list and had control over forum funds. I was caught by a couple of these scammers because I "trusted" their reputation in the community. Selling or buying an account is meaningless because you never really know the character of the person you're dealing with. The ONLY rule of thumb you can follow and be safe is "trust no one".

What price would you be happy to sell for?

I don't really think accounts would be that valuable unless they had some trusted positive feedback.

I can offer 0.01 BTC.

Obviously any trust built up during the life of one account will not transfer to another person because it would be common knowledge that the account is in different hands. Thank you for the offer! If the offer was serious that means accounts do have value for trade. Regrettably, I will have to decline.

One of these scammers was a moderator for a long time, one was a worldwide spokesman for Bitcoin and another one was on the default trust list and had control over forum funds. I was caught by a couple of these scammers because I "trusted" their reputation in the community. Selling or buying an account is meaningless because you never really know the character of the person you're dealing with. The ONLY rule of thumb you can follow and be safe is "trust no one".
