I've done plenty of reading up around the forum but was hoping people would be able to help with specing my rig.

I'm in the UK if that makes a difference to what hardware is available.

Firstly, the simple stuff that's already decided. I've got a 1500w Enermax PSU that I plan on using and I've got a sata3 hdd that I'll use. I'll get an AMD Sempron 145 CPU for the rig and 4gb of ram.

Then there's the decision about what cards to use. 4 x R9 290 is an option but 5 R9 280x would be about the same price if not cheaper. Am I right in saying the R9 280x cards would be the best bet? And any advice on which specific model to go for, these are the cards I'm choosing between? I've seen a few people mention the VTX3D R9 280x which I think is this card and the price could mean it's a very good option and I'd be able to get 6 of them.

Motherboards, I've found a few choices... ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 AMD 970 for £69, Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0 AMD 970 for £80, or Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 AMD 970 for £60. They could all take 6 cards, however many cards I was using I'd be using powered risers. Anyone got knowledge about which of these would be best suited to mining in a multi card rig? And of course if there are any other motherboards I should consider then I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Would 5 x R9 280x be okay running from my Enermax Platimax 1500w?

I think that's all the questions I've got for now.

Thanks for the help. Smiley

radeon r9 290x's supposedly do around 900 kh/s each, so 4 of those would work, but probably run you around 1300 watts.  I've got 3 280x's doing over 2100 Kh/s  @ ~940 watts, waiting on a second PSU and my aluminum frame chassis to come in to add 3 more.

I tried venturing out onto 290x's but they didn't perform so well mixed with my 280x's in win 7, perhaps they'll do better on a linux platform

R9 290x are pricey Sad

So 6 x VTX3D AMD Radeon R9 280X would be over 4200Kh/s using under 2k of power and would require a second PSU.

Many options.
