I also went to bitcoin faucet and signed up. So far nothing has arrived. How long does it take to get all the blocks downloaded normally?
Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

No, transactions are registered on the blockchain.

But if you want to see these transactions on your client you have to download all the blocks, then your BTC will appear.

How do you know when all the blocks are downloaded?

You check the total blocks number here http://bitcoinwatch.com/

Now we are almost at 142000 for example
