To pass on the wisdom: If you're looking to buy BTC (which a lot of sellers will trade other cryptocurrencies for) with fiat, you can avoid going through exchanges by trading through localbitcoins.com. Unlike an exchange, that site doesn't take a cut. What it does is hook you up with individual sellers near you, so that you can arrange to make a bank deposit, wire transfer, etc and in return get BTC directly from the seller that you choose. It also has a reputation and escrow system to discourage scams.
