My assumption? Large hardware sale miner to miner.

I think it has more to do with luck as deepbit was really lucky the last 24 hours after being unlucky. If it stays this way then perhapse some of the people who jumped to other forks are coming back.

I think somehow this has todo with trading volume on mtgox. Some miners obviously live hand to mouth... It's going back down already btw.
PS: I don't think this is just network variance the swing is far too high.

Ha! Lovin the pics.
This forum cracks me up in other ways too. When there's a tiny blip in hash power due to variance theres usually like 3 threads "ZOMG FPGAS CAME TO LIFE AND ARE HACKING BITCOIN", but when there's actually a sustained > 24hour large rise in hash power (we're at 7.4 blocks / hr currently) no one says a thing.

I think a lot of the people who panic easily have left(which caused the drop) and people are slowly acquiring their used hardware. The reason I say this is I've noticed a big drop in the amount of topics lately/amount of replies. Plus a lot of full rigs have been selling in the goods section the last two weeks. To be honest I was pleasantly surprised when we had a decrease in difficulty but its probably back to business as usual. I expect to see 5-10% increases coming up which still isn't too bad compared to the 50% increases seen in June.

I was about to post something like that, bcpokey.
I looked at the chart, and thought to myself, "That's no moon...it's a space station!"
The last blip was tall but very narrow. This one is sustained for over a day. It can't just be variance. We have people adding hardware, comforted by the recent drop in difficulty (just as I predicted).

I think the chart could be wrong. I have been checking it every few hours and the hashrate is displayed at ~13.15 on the bitcoinwatch numerical stats. Yet the chart is showing ~15.5 terahash. The pie chart is also off, it doesn't show Eligius with the same size slice as ars and there is a huge "other" chunk as 2nd largest, which presumably includes the eligius ~450 gigahash plus the mystery 2 ghash forming the neck of the beast.

I expect to see 5-10% increases coming up which still isn't too bad compared to the 50% increases seen in June. That's a fair hypothesis, the gold rush media blitz brought lots of wide eyed optimists with little knowledge seeking fortune for free, as the feeding frenzy died down the follow-behinds probably wanted to get out with their tails between their legs. I wish I wasn't electrically capped or I would have happily acquired their departing carcasses. Curse you other long haulers, keeping my difficulty all high and junk.
