If you can SSH into it, maybe you can install a miner.

You can't ssh to it as it runs Windows 8ish OS. But since it's x86 compatible maybe there will be guides soon how to kill the OS and install Linux...

But why mine on Xbox one? It will give out less than 1 GH/s. For the price of Xbox One, you can buy 30 GH/s rig.

Scrypt, though the gravy train seems to be slowing down there. Fwiw, PS4 is far more suited to mining. They both support OpenCL, which is pretty cool.

Assuming you can get Linux on it, and find a decently-compatible driver... maybe ~175KH/s on Xbox, ~250-300KH/s on PS4. Idunno full specs on them, though.

Dunno how severe they are on running third-party code (is it like that horrible Win8 RT thing?), but maybe it'd be possible to run them on the shipped OS. Unless you're coding it yourself, you'll probably have a long wait until someone figures this out.

ETA: Looking at old PS3 mining threads, I guess they're pretty harsh about running unapproved software.

I guess buying a used video card that can mine 700-800Kh/s for $200 is still better than using gaming consoles.

Could be a fun project.

An old GameCube or Nintendo wii would be just as effective, they run ATI chips http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_(graphics_chip)

I thought that there is decent gpu in xbox one and PS4. I think its cool if you can mine scrypt while you are not using it for games.

Decent for games, but still not as good for mining. Better get something like this:

There's no way to run unsigned code on a PS4 or Xbox One yet, so this isn't possible at the moment.

You'd need a lot of Xbox Ones

The GPU is close to a 7850, probably around 300 kH/s

PS4's is closer to a 7870 - ~350 kH/s

Also game consoles are hungry for power. So...

People should start mining on iPhone 5S. It has the strongest 64 bit CPU out of all smartphones Smiley))

i'm hoping people will start mining with pet electric eels.  free power, and it's water cooled.

My fish mine for me, pretty much the only reason I bought asics was to warm my fish tank. I was using a 400W and a 350W heater in it anyway, so I replaced those for some asics.

Back on topic, dont the Xbox and PS4 use an APU rather than a true GPU? So it would be difficult to compare it directly to a 7850 or 7870. I guess we will have to try mining on them and find out. My bet would be mining on the Steam Machine, it actually has a dedicated GPU, an R9 270 iirc.

that's a great idea.  i remember the guy that used a rig to heat his washroom's underfloor radiant heating, and thought that was genius too.  my plecos need a few gpus!
