Just saw this come across the wire...  What do people think of this? Is Tim Cook up to the task as successor?

Quote
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Looks like Apple shareholders don't have confidence in him...

Steve jobs WAS APPLE. No one believed in his company except for he. Much of his success was due to cheap labor (China) and price gouging (USA , AND EUROPE). He was indeed a visionary, and maybe he thought/thinks we should have already been much more advanced as a race than we already are. He was known as an isolationist and didn't like people. I once read a story about how a Student was trying to get an interview with him for her master paper. Here was his reaction lol...

aapl is only down $6.61 (1.73%) and most of the loss was from afterhours trading last night. heres how it is doing today compared to s&p and dow for perspective:

judging from the way it is trending, aapl will outperform the market today.

also, theres a thread about this already: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=39127.msg479824#new

I did a search before starting a thread, looks like the one you linked to was started nearly 30 minutes after I posted this (see time stamp below)

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is officially stepping down.

my mistake.

No big deal, truthfully I shouldn't have even bothered to post about being first, I'm just still riled up by a post Matthew N. Wright made regarding one of my posts in another thread...
