I randomly saw this too. I check the power tab in newegg and the 5970 was on the list(it never is) so I checked and it was on sale. I've never actually heard of newegg selling these at least since I got active in bitcoins around June.

Wow, where in the world did they get these? Crazy.

This is by far the best high density buy you can find. I wish I wasn't electrically capped or I'd be all over this like white on rice, or something. EBay isn't a great idea though, what with the giant sell fees and all. You'd need to sell for around $600 to break even, which may or may not happen.

^Just bought 2 for that reason considering my PSU can only handle 1.Will likely sell one if the price is right.

It's obvious the card's costs can be made up very quickly as it is the king of mining. Can't wait to see what it can do with the new GUI miner update and Phatk 2.2 when I get mine.

It's driving me bonkers... my current rig has 2x 6870's ... i'd so love to swap them out for 2x 5970s but new egg don't ship to Australia.

I'm a call out computer tech and I e-mailed my supplier and included the link to newegg and asked if they can get these cards and they replied back saying "thanks for asking but sorry these are EOL already please look at the 6990 or similar" but those are always out of stock too... and the 5970's use so much less power...

Payoff on this card is around 178 days -- expect to earn around $3/day.

Let's all hope Bitcoin is around and profitable for 6 more months...

178 days is FAST. I was looking at a payoff on my Core i7 of something like 23 years.  Glad I kept mining (well, for a while anyway).

I'm not saying this is a good card or a bad card but its more like 4 dollars a day at 15c a kwh. If things stay the same (which I know probably won't) that's 125 days.

For people with low electricty costs lets say 8c a kwh that's around 4.50 a day or 111 days to pay off.

178 days is FAST. I was looking at a payoff on my Core i7 of something like 23 years.  Glad I kept mining (well, for a while anyway).

But that's just for the card. You still need a PC to power it.
And 178 days is only for those with 8.8c per kW/h electricity. Your mileage may vary.

As I've said before, 6 months is a long time. A very long time. Especially in Bitcoin years. Bitcoin has only been around for 2 years, even for Satoshi and his friends! Nevermind most of us, who have only been doing this for 3 months. Think about it -- Bitcoin was 170K difficulty just a few months ago. Now it's 1.8 million.  Where will it be in 6 months? It could be anywhere. We could enter the next phase of adoption, when tons of gamers decide to go for it and difficulty could double.

I'm also not convinced the 5970 would have a good resale value considering it costs $500.00. It would have a great resale value among *miners*, but if I'm selling it, it's because Bitcoin mining is no longer worth it, so...

We won't go into what kind of a decision buying a Core i7 just for mining would be...
(You could have at least 2 good 58XX cards for $300!)

Thanks for calculating that for me.

I have a spreadsheet that I use for my own cards, and when looking at new cards.

Yes, and with what seems like a new block chain being introduced every week, it's not hard to have a new card paid off in less than a week.  In some cases a few hours.  In fact I bought this 5970 out of profits I made off of 8 HOURS worth of mining Ixcoins Smiley  178 days my ass! Tongue
