switch to phatk2.2 if you are not already.

This is the first I've heard of phatk 2.2, but I don't really keep up on the latest & greatest.  Is it faster?

yes.  it's also better on execution of code where I've noticed a 2 degree temp drop.  which ofcourse allowed me to increase OC Smiley

Just got mine set up. I'm getting 377-378 Mhash per core using guiminer 2011-07-01 with poclbm on Windows7 64bit, flags -v -w128. I could not get it to OC past 850. In an open case my temps are an off the hook 90c+. I also could not get the memory to down clock that far without crashing. How did you do it? I tried Rivatuner and MSI Afterburner.
Trixx tends to be more reliable. I have no clue why but I have had problems going below 500 mhz and with trixx that problem does not exists.

Yeah I used Trixx to set the clocks and voltage.  I think I can probably go higher than 910MHz but I'm scared heh

there's no reason to be scared.  just watch them temps and keep them in a reasonable range.  if it runs stable, you're good.  Keep in mind that you might want to consider running the "cooler" gpu at a higher clock rate than the second one rather than running both at same clock speeds.

i have been running a pair of 5970 for a while, not that impressed. 5870s are still much better bang for buck.  with win7 64bit and guiminer, any kind of overclock makes the pc crash after a few days of running.  Now i just run everything at default, gets 1200MH for the pair - 300MH per gpu.  You will definitely need some space between the cards if running 2 of those otherwise the fan cannot keep up. I had to get a pcie extender and an utility blower fan. Now it runs at around 70 degress with 60% fan speed.

With so many people buying this card, hopefully someone can post some stable config for win7 running guiminer.

If you want a stable overclock over 825mhz or so you need to overvolt as well.  Stock 5970 gpus are 1049mV whereas stock 5870 gpus are 1175mV.  You SHOULD be able to safely overvolt to that level but your current draw will be significantly higher.  Also you will need to keep a sharp eye on the 'hot' gpu.  Decouple the gpus using Afterburner so you can OC independently.

Good luck!

I decided to just keep mine and not RMA it since I was able to bend the bracket back into shape.  It doesn't look too bad now.  But yeah, packaging sucked ass.

Just got mine, the packaging was subpar but considering it was OEM not a bad deal.I also had no issues with anything being bent and will try the actual cards tomorrow. The two of them felt like I was carrying the ten commandments, lol.

What struck me about the 5970s --

You essentially have the shaders of TWO 5870's in ONE card -- and with a cooling fan -- that isn't much bigger than a single 5870. How the heck does all the heat get out?

No wonder they're hard to overclock.

I'd rather have (2) 5870's for $250 each. Getting another PC isn't *that* big of a deal for me, especially since I go Linux. So density per slot isn't a priority.

I guess it's like a strategy game or RPG  -- If your main character is from the "Linux" race you can easily have multiple machines, but you can't overvolt. Everything has downsides and upsides.

It depends on your situation I guess. I didn't have the space for another 5870 and I ended up having to remove my old 5850 just to have a spot for the new 5970.  Plus I've always wanted a 5970 and now have an extra 5850 to either sell or build a new system with.

Oh yeah and it looks like the 2nd core is downstream of the 1st core in the cooling path.  So that's why it gets so hot compared to the 1st core since it gets sloppy seconds for its air supply.

^Lol,Don't even think about selling just yet.

I think the 5970's were longer than I anticipated but have barely just enough room in my case for both, but will have to do open case for second PSU though.

Looks like there are a bunch here http://www.buy.com/prod/ati-radeon-hd-5970-pci-e-pci-express-x16-2gb-gddr5-2560x1600-video-card/q/loc/101/223771192.html and they give you a $10 coupon to cover the shipping, so you pay $497.55.

Still trying to decide if I should buy 3 more.

I say do it Tongue I guarantee you'll have fun building your next rig Wink

Is this the only location that's left that has 5970's?

I just got mine and was a little shocked at how small the box was that it came in.  At first I was like "there's no way this is a 5970, the box is way too small.  They must have shipped me something else."  So I was kind of panicking while opening the box!  But sure enough it was a brand spankin new OEM HD 5970 shoehorned diagonally into the small cardboard box.  Apparently it was fit so tight that the mounting bracket was bent on the top and bottom.  No biggie since I can just bend it back, but it's something you might want to know about if you're thinking of getting one.  It came with a CrossFire cable, DVI plug, and Mini Displayport adapter too.  I'm a little disappointed in the packaging and now I'm a little scared to actually try it out!

I just got mine today and had no bent bracket although mine came shipped exactly how you described.  I have a rack over it that has a 5830 off to one side and two 120mm fans blowing cold air down onto my 5970, here is a picture of the fan setup:

With 850 MHz clock & 250 MHz memory I am getting 380 GH/s each core with 60% fan and 70C temp (with 88C-90C on VRMs).  This is my first 5970 and I must say I love it, great energy efficiency and speed.  The only downside is that it shoots out a lot of really hot air and the top board cover can nearly burn your hand it gets so hot.  Pretty sure you could use this card as a toaster  Cheesy  The deal on Newegg is definitely worth it imo, as long as you blast this card with lots of fans (lowered my VRMs on the second GPU core by 5C by adding the second fan over it.  I think once the card burns in 400 MH/s each core is easily obtainable without too high a fan speed.

Btw, I love your mining team Mousepotato (I'm MATT_DAMON, lol).

looks like we have some great OC setup with the 5970 now. guys please post back in a week or two and let us know if you can actually maintain those OC without crashing.

I was able to get to 400MH but after 2-3 days it always freezes the whole computer, same at 350MH.
