So, are the people buying 500 dollars cards happy with their purchase when the trend for the BTC
price seems to be pointing in only one direction? As in down...

(And please do not mention solidcoins... I am going to guess that is not profitable as it was).

Basically my point is.. are you doing this for fun and giggles or to make some money in a reasonable
amount of time? Because the ROI on this card is getting out there. 4.5 months (143 days) lets say with a btc
price of 8-8.50 and free electricity/time/cooling. If you have to pay for electricity is gets a lot worse.
.08 kWh, lets say, which is cheap, stretches out the pay off date to 200 days.. so after a year of mining
it with no downtime or screw ups you can make 176 bucks.. and that is still cutting off details like exchange
fees, cooling, hardware failure, internet failure, etc..

I am not being a prick. I actually thought about buying a couple of these but the math is just not making
sense. Too many assumptions have to be made.

What say you?

The answer to that is going to vary from person to person.  For me though this $500 card was already paid for with my 58XX cards, so ROI is a non issue.. the 5970 is my ROI.  With Dead Island coming out next week and Battlefield 3 and MW3 it's going to be plenty of use outside of mining.

Amazon didn't raise the price, UnityElectronics did. Probably since Newegg is OOS, they figure they can charge more now. At those prices I'd rather just get 6990's since they'll hold value a little longer  than 5970's.

Everyone wants a 1200w Silverstone or Corsair but frankly those Dell units are rock solid and if anything are watt underrated.  Dell does that to keep its butt covered.  I have 2 5970s and an AMD A8-3850 APU on a single 875 and it's been running for months.  The wiring harness is ugly as hell but who cares?

An Alienware 1100w will easily run 3 possibly 4 slightly undervolted (1000mV).  The thing is ginormous.

I was able to get the 2x5970s up and running last night, pulling in 400 Mhash/sec per GPU.  I had to go out and buy a new power supply and I chose to get a case that had a ton of airflow (Thermaltake Element G), particularly on the cards themselves.  If you choose to use a case I highly recommend it, though you will need to remove the vertical drive cage for the 5970s to fit.  I'm using an old Core i3-2100 Dual Core CPU I had sitting around, and CPU is basically under full load.  The 5970s held up great at 900/350 1.149V, hottest GPU 80C, coldest GPU 74C.
