To me token is issued on a top of some protocol, like ethereum ERC tokens. So everything that is issued on some network i call token. Coin is independent, like Ether and Monero or Bitcoin. At least i see it that way

There are centralized and decentralized coins. A decentralized coin is mineable but the centralized is owned by someone (pre-mined) who distributes and sells it (Ripple could be an example). In my opinion tokens and centralized coins are similar. Using the Ethereum network, you avoid developers and you use the existing blockchain of ETH, so you don't need to do it on your own.
And you have an advantage, your token could possible attract more investors than a new unknown coin.

I don't know if there is any straightforward distinction between coins and tokens, but overall coins are means of payment or store of value while tokens may have some functionalities. There are few good articles/posts covering this topic, so you can read them and make your own conclusions:

The main difference between altcoins and tokens is in their structure; altcoins are separate currencies with their own separate blockchain while tokens operate on top of a blockchain that facilitates the creation of decentralized applications.

Please don't copy from other sites without providing a credit and a link. This post is a straight copy from the summary on this page

I think yu are very correct, tokens are launched on an existing platform while coins are more likee standalone crypto assets

Am I wrong or is a Token technically just an Ethereum thing?

The main different with coin and token is, A coin they have their own blockchain. For example Bitcoin, Ethereum and lite coin. But for token they don't have own blockchain. Token deploy on using other blockchain. Most of token use Ethereum blockchain for deploy token. They called erc20 token. Example OmiseGO is erc20 token. It's build on ethereum blockchain.

I think tokens are depended on a coin to be functional , for example, alternative currencies used in ICOs are mostly tokens that derive it functionality from ERC 20 ,which is a coin that is already established.
