I'm playing with one right now, but it's in its infancy yet and I'm not sure if I'm even going to release it.
But yea, you basically take the code and change it the way you want then compile it.

I think for bitcoin  things.

1.go partly or completely on system proof of stake - in order to reduce impact miners
2.increase transaction speed
and the need to create coins on its base will disappear
