A couple pretty good free ones off the top of my head:

Malwarebytes
Super Anti-Spyware (I know what you're thinking - the name is creative genius)
Spybot Search & Destroy

Install Linux, then you don't need to have anti-virus software.

I would probably suggest getting these two. First off avg is a good software, they have a free version, also malwarebytes also works great for checks. Thanks

AVG is the best free anti virus. Just make sure you get the free one, not the paid one which they push.

Avast is the best out there. Also use comodo firewall. Combined use of both makes your pc highly secured.

First make sure your OS and other software like Adobe Flash, Reader , Java etc is up to date. A combination of Avast, Malwarebytes and Comodo firewall should keep you safe

Avast. Avast is the best Antivirus I've ever used in the past 3 years. Used the free version without any problems. Light on resources and few false positives too.
