MSI Z77A-GD80 6x 280x GPU Detection

Im having a hell of a time getting 6x 280x's to get detected on this board which is supposed to be like the z77a-gd65 that was popular for mining.


I can only get three cards detected at this point.  Is there something im missing? Im using slots number 3 & 6 for the pcie 1x slots and im using a single 16x slot in the #2 pcie slot!

Ive tried shorting the presence pins for the other 1x slots but no go.    Im scratching my head hear and ive been at it for almost 2 weeks now and frustration is kicking in! I need some fresh minds on this so here i am.

2x EVGA 1000w G Series Power Supplys
MSI Z77A-GD80
4x SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X 280-X
2x MSI 280X GAMING
IVY BRIDGE 1620
8GB 1866mhz GSKILL DDR3

6x 1x to 16x PCIE Risers (powered)



Is there anyone out there that can get these 6 280x's to run on this board?

you must run your rig with win 8.1 in order to get more than 5 vga, dont' forget to install 13.12 driver

do you try install 6 vga on rig?

i can not get my fifth and sixth GPU be dectected on system, i'm using Win7 sp2 x64.

my rig is as following,

12G ram
5x Sapphire R9 280x
1x MSI R9 270x Gaming
BIOSTAR Hi-Fi H81S2 motherboard

can you help me with this issue - the system can not recognize the fifth and sixth GPU?

Hey!!! Thanks for the reply!! Last night i just found out 1 280x is no good! I plugged it in by itself and i powered on the machine and it let out a puf and an electrical smell!

Im doing an rma now.


Will continue testing with other 280s i have on site..

I didnt even think of trying 8.1.


For some odd reason i was thinking it was the molex connectors to the powered risers.
I put each gpu on it own cable for the molex connectors thinking it wasnt getting the 75w .. i was originally double or trippling up on molex connections via a single cable.
