I have lost the password for my Bitcoin-qt (have close to nothing in it), and I need to reinstall it but I don't want to waste my time downloading the whole blockchain. Can anybody tell me how to do this?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

If you're using Windows, just do this:

1- PRESS WINDOWS + R key.
2- Write: %APPDATA%
3- PRESS ENTER
4- CUT the file wallet.dat and paste in other location like C:\
5- Compress the FOLDER BITCOIN located on %APPDATA%
6- Copy to other location like C:\ the compressed file
7- Delete the BITCOIN folder
8- Reinstall the BITCOIN-QT, but DON'T OPEN when finish instalation (uncheck OPEN BITCOIN)
9- Decompress your file compressed on step 6
10- Copy the folder BITCOIN to %APPDATA%
11- Open your software bitcoin-qt and create a new adress.

Hope this help you, sorry for english too bad, I'm Braziliam! Tongue

Don't do what the previous poster said, that isn't necessary Wink

Do this instead:

1- Close Bitcoin-qt
2- PRESS WINDOWS + R key.
3- Write: %APPDATA%
4- PRESS ENTER
5- CUT the file wallet.dat and paste in other location like C:\ (this is a backup of your wallet.dat, should you ever remember your password you can use this to access your lost Bitcoins again)
6- Open Bitcoin-qt again

Tada: Fresh wallet Smiley

As Mushoz said, the file that is password protected and keeps track of your bitcoins is called wallet.dat.  Just move it somewhere safe so that if you ever remember your password you can access it.  When bitcoin-qt is launched and finds that the wallet.dat file has been moved it will create a new one for you and you can start over.  This time write down your password and print out your private keys.
