Maybe getting used to a blockchain wallet might be easier. Do you want a web wallet or one on your computer?

True, but might not be best to just straight into them for a beginner.

Something with 2step verification hits the spot, also it's a plus if hosted in north America rather than in Vlads basement in Russia.

Hi

for start you can use some on-line wallet like ... https://blockchain.info/wallet  ... you just need an email for registration.

or

download and install client from https://multibit.org/ .... this wallet takes few min. to synchronize.

or

if you want secure wallet use https://bitcoinarmory.com/ ... install app, but it takes nearly whole day to sync. and downloads blockchain.

I started with multibit and still using it ... just do not mess up with private key export

Haha. Might turn out not to be a plus hosted in America if the feds try take it down for whatever bullshit reason.

Make sure to take advantage of their security features. Set up two factor authentication, and put a second password on to be able to spend funds.

I started with blockchain wallet, by far the easiest and quickest to set up. Safety is OK as long as you use a good and unique password and have the right protection on your computer. Still wouldn't put my life saving in it tho.

Don't trust websites. They can be hacked and lose all your bitcoins(proven in the past with bitfloor, if I recall correctly). I would recommend electrum because it doesn't download the blockchain from the beggining like Bitcoin QT

If you want a simple system and online: blockchain.info is the best solution. If so, the best is to download the Chrome or Firefox extension to avoid downloading javascript from the website (to prevent that any hack on the website could make you lost your BTC) and check that you don't have any spyware or trojan when you login.
If you want a very secure system: make a Live USB with Tails distro, install every time you use it Electrum, make a wallet offline, copy the public master key to a pendrive, install Electrum in your PC and restore the public key. Then, when you want to make a transaction you will have to make offline.

Yes, but blockchain.info is pretty secure and realiable. It's not some site hosted in Vlads basement in Russia like Wanksta said above.

Oh yeah, that ought to help you avoid being spied on or flagged as a money launderer.

Stay away from the evil Russians or anything outside the safety and security of the United States.

I'd say multibit would be a good bet, very easy to use.

Yes, it is. Gox also isn't American.
