I was looking at the older USB Block Erupters on Amazon. They're really cheap now (about $30-40), but all the reviews state that it's impossible to pay-back the initial investment by mining bitcoin. So I was wondering, are there any altcoins that can be mined with one of those? Or are they all too high in difficulty to possibly make it worthwhile?
I don't have a lot of money to spend, so I probably wouldn't want to build a $2000 scrypt rig or buy a $5000 ASIC machine, but I think I could easily get 1 or 2 of these cheap Block Erupters. I wouldn't be doing it for immediate profit. I'd rather just mine a few 100k of a variety of altcoins and hang on to them, to see if they become worthwhile maybe 5 or 10 years down the road.

On coinwarz.com, there are 16 types of coin available, and all of them yield negative profitability. They don't seem like very attractive targets for mining (except possibly FireFly Coin, which I could mine about a hundred per day). Those 16 coins seem to be pretty major and pretty well-known. Does anyone have any experience with more obscure coins?
What about AsicCoin? GlobeCoin? ChocoCoin? ButterflyCoin? BountyCoin? There was even a recent post about MED with a hybrid Sha256Scrypt algorithm.
Maybe it might still be possible to get a few hundred of those per day with a Block Erupter?

but guess what u dont win the lottery id u dont play. well, i earnestly hope you win soon, becuase statistically speaking, you're more likely to be hit by lightning while travelling to claim your prize, and i want you to have as much time to enjoy it as possible.

I definitely agree that using a Block Erupter to mine bitcoin isn't going to bear fruit. But surely someone else must have a Block Erupter here in this forum. Or even a similar cheap ASIC device? Is everyone just keeping quiet because you don't want to reveal your secret ASIC coin that you think is going to go up a lot really soon?

A Block-Erupter-Only coin sounds good to me. I'll follow the recent trend with altcoin launches and demonstrate my total ignorance of the altcoin scene by picking a three-letter code that's already taken.
ANNOUNCING: Block-Erupter Treasure Coin or BTC
The new coin that can only be mined with a Block Erupter!!!!

The only thing you should mine with older asics is Unobtanium
I think it is an attractive substance to elite miners who value difficulty and ultra rarity. I have tried to cash the few I have in, but if you actually mine Un it's hard to give up. It's also really low volume, and I think this keeps the price stable. One of my all time favorite alts.

I suggest GlobeCoin (GLB), it is a promising coin, difficulty is still low enough to mine with BEs. Suggested pool: glb.supnova.cc. Enjoy.

Thanks for the awesome ideas, guys!
I think that there is definitely some good altcoins that can be mined with a BE. I'm starting to think that it would be a good investment.
I'd probably also want to get a Raspberry Pi to plug the BE into, so it can run 24/7 without having to keep my main laptop open and running.
I'll let you all know how it goes.
Thanks for your help!

Yes, mandatory to don't waste all mining reward for electricity !

A quick update on my progress: I bought a Raspberry Pi starter kit, with a case, power supply and so on, and it's now shipped. It should arrive in a few days! I'm pretty excited.
