How much capital would it take to start a GPU farm of at least 50 M/H. What all would be involved? Has anybody done this from personal experience? Can you post proof and guidance? I am seriously looking into starting a farm but would just like some info on where to begin and would like some info from a big hasher if possible?

I will answer some of this.....

Obviously, you major concern is going to be "Getting ahold of the GPU's"  By far the biggest logistical problem.  AS far as capital, other than the GPU situation you are probably looking at about $30-$35k in hardware.  That includes an estimate for the GPU's.  You are also going to have a few decisions to make on your location.

You are going to be looking for about 27kw of power.  Much more than you could power off your normal home consumption.

Colocation:
You could collocate this setup in a datacenter.  You are probably looking at 3 cabinets assuming you can get at least 12kw per cabinet. (You shouldn't have a problem, unless it is a SUPER cheap host)

The downside to the Colo, is you are going to spend about $.20-$.25 per kwh.  This could get expensive.

Upgrading your home:
This could also be expensive, as an upfront cost of getting this installed.  Also, depending on your zoning or what your power company has available, this might not be an option either.



Can you provide any additional details?  What were you thinking for hosting?  Would you put this in your house or do you have a location or datacenter in mind?

At a rate of 1000 usd/mh 50mh would come to around 50 grand.


Cost of cards alone:
50mh worth of 270x = $200 x 100 = $20,000
280x = $300 x 65 = $19,500
290 = $400 x 50 = $20,000

Looks like all the cards are about equal in terms of usd/kh. Would probably come down to the most efficient card electricity wise.

You're neglecting the markup on the 280x and 290 cards. 280x is running $400 and 290s $500.

True that it's a bit more than 1 grand per Megahash by the time you add all the components needed to get things running (provided you know how to put everything together - both software and hardware)...That's not even including the cooling and electric required plus rent and possible additional electrical work...Not trying to discourage you.....If you leave in Colorado, Michigan, etc. then you can save a bundle on cooling of course!

I have a 21-rig farm at 52Mh, 4 in my house for heat and the other 17 in the garage.  It cost about $42,000 for all the equipment, electrical, and air-cooling for now.  I did this by running a 100-amp subpanel to the garage and installing lots of 220v breakers.  I have basically filled this 100a and am now looking to have a separate 400-amp service run to my garage to support an additional 70 computers or so.  It would be 80, but I will need to account for amps which will need to go to air-conditioning when it gets warmer out.  I have a mix of R9 280x, 270x, and 270.  I did all the electrical work myself but will contract out the 400-amp install which is not part of the $42k.  There will come a time when I will be limited only by the amount of electricity available, but until then, expansion!

If you are planning a great farm of that  scale consider just leading a building in an industrial or commercial zone. You could spend all the money upgrading your home like I did  then hit the  400 AMP cap and you'll still want to scale it up even more. With 3phase power you'll really be  able to grow.
