Most altcoins are "promoted" at some point or another with giveaways. I've never quite understood this. Wouldn't this just result in more coins being dumped on the exchanges, driving down price? I mean, the idea should be to convince people the coin has value so they BUY the coin, this is what drives up price, right?

90% ARE NOT EVEN GIVEAWAYS! Just people trying to get you to do things.
True, "Bribes" would be more accurate. "I'll give 100 people 10,000 crapcoin each for voting on Cryptsy!" But still, seems self-defeating. When crapcoin does show up on Cryptsy, you're going to have 100 people with 10,000 coins each (1 million coins total) that are willing to sell for any price since they got the coins for FREE.

It's so people have free coins, when people get free coins they will give positive opinion about the coin and be unintentional shills, which will help the preminer to drive up the price and dump their shit.

It wouldn't. The amounts in giveaways are too low to manipulate price

It wouldn't. The amounts in giveaways are too low to manipulate price Exactly, for example the latest release YUM BaconBits premined 450,000 and is going to give away 11,000, that's 2.44% of the premine.

I would say that it is rather 50% that pay out and other 50% are scams. None of the Earthcoin giveaways have paid out But for others they ofthen actually give away.

Giveaways get you to remember a coin's name and it's price. I was given a fraction of a coin when the price was high and memorized that price. When the price dropped I knew buying more was a good bet.
Sure enough, the price went back up and I made a profit.
Without the giveaway I would have had no idea what a high or low price was for that coin. I doubt I would have bought any without the giveaway.

Giveaways really need their own sub-forum, I love them but they sure clog up the main one quickly.
