For $400 you might be better off, buying bitcoin. Rather then mining.

If you want to start mining you must atleast need $1000 for small rig or small device which could give you back $10/ Day if not you cab just buy bitcoin and start day trading or some alts trading.
Good Luck

You can look at this comparison for mining hardware: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

However, you are too late to start mining Bitcoin since huge players and specialized chips (ASICs) have made the difficulty go through the roof.  However, you might have some luck mining some of the other cryptocurrencies (alt coins).

Give you an idea... My 3gpu mining set up which cost me about $1000 (not including the rest of the cool stuff I have for gaming) would earn me 32 cents a day.  And would take me 2820 days to make ONE bitcoin.  And that calculation is assuming the difficulty stays the same as it is today.  Which it will not.

Since I took my gaming pc and added gpus and didn't go with asic or anything I am sure you could specialize a bit and get a dedicated miner.  Maybe you can improve on that number.

Maybe you order a 50gh/s asic miner for $1000 and by some miracle get it tomorrow. You can make $15 a day. take 56 days to earn one bitcoin.  When will the difficulty jump?  Probably shortly after the the 28nm 600GH/s devices come out.  Then very quickly your $1000 investment turns into $100 when you sell it on ebay.

SO, do you risk it?  Spend the $1000 and hope it pays for itself.  Maybe just buy one Bitcoin for $900.  Some think it will double before the end of the year?  Maybe get a GPU setup and mine some altcoins.  Its a lot of fun. imo

I have no real advice.  Just a lot of invested money in an asic that is worthless in a short amount of time.  Likely you will make your money back.  But forget the dreams of getting rich quick.  You (and I) missed that boat.

Calculation done by coinwarz.com  btw

What if I buy a cheap 360M/H for $30 and use it to mine alt coins?
What altcoin should I mine and what pool should I use?

By 360MH do you mean one of those little asic usb sticks?  if so then you will never make your money back mining Bitcoin.  the cost of electricity will be higher than what  you get from your miner.

AND...

You can NOT use a Bitcoin asic miner to mine altcoins.  Asic means application-specific integrated circuit.  meaning it SPECIFICALLY mines Bitcoin.

What altcoin should I mine and what pool should I use?

You can't use ASIC BTC equipment on alt coins if the 360M/H is what you are referring to. Alts are Scrypt and the ASICs only work on the SHA coins.

So you only have a laptop? Thats pretty limiting. You could probably piecemeal to pretty basic system together for cheap though. I am running 2x R9 290's off a 6 year old motherboard with no issues. Then hit up ebay for some lower end ATI cards. I have a 6870 that I'm getting ready to get rid of that does about 300KH/s on alts. They go for cheap on ebay, like 80 bucks, and you can run them with a cheap power supply. Running some linux distro like ubuntu would help out too, but if there isn't a pre-compiled cgminer out there it could be some trouble to get cgminer built from source. You could also maybe even find a used machine with Windows on it on ebay or a local recycle shop. Only real important item to address is RAM, power supply and verifying the machine has PCIe.

Finding a good pool just takes floating around until you find one that is stable and has a good payout system for your rig. Usually my very basic benchmark of a pool is how fast the front end loads. If their server lags spitting out a webpage chances are its gonna have a hard time keeping up on the backend.

Like others have mentioned, it could also be viable to take that 400 and buy BTC when its low then use the BTC to buy new alts as they come out then cash out as they hit their bubble. Wash rinse and repeat. If you can get some coin https://www.bitcoinstore.com is a good place to buy computer stuff with BTC. Some of it is a generation old but still works fine.

middlecoin.com is a pretty good site to just let a miner run cause it automagically picks the best alt to mine then pays you in BTC. I'll let my miners run on it if i am between alts or as a failover.

Good luck!

In that price range the 10ghash asicminer blades are an option. You'll need PSU to power it/them , racking gear to hang them (zip ties work well), cooling fan(s), and maybe a raspian proxy, and the backplane is very nice is you have a bunch of them.  We  have 20 on 2 backplanes with a 1000w psu each. they usually do better than 200ghash on btcguild.  We found a way to ooverclock the    v2 blades using graphite from pencils. The V1 blades are a bit less arcane to overclock but still require solid knowledge of electronic to complete. Our v1 is .doing 13ghash.

I am selling some of the v2 blades. let me know if you want one. $450 plus shipping with all the original boxes.
