I am really curious what peoples obsession is with all these crazy alt-coin names..
Do you think the name of the coin has anything to do with whether it will succeed or not based on first impression? If you saw an alt-coin with a weird name would you really want to invest in it, or would you stick with something more pleasing to the ear/roll of the tongue?  If you look throughout history, the name of anything has never really played a huge role in whether something worked or not..  When it comes to a type of money though it does make me wonder if some of the crazier names will even last.  Right now as it seems any coin could rule them all though.

Personally I like the top 3 in my opinion, bitcoin/litecoin/feathercoin but there are some other interesting ones out there but I personally think these will be around a lot longer than some of the other named coins and not just because of the name but because of how the coin itself was designed.

So my question to you is what are your fav alt-coin(s) and why?

Unfortunately the name does sometimes matter and is just down to gimmick and jumping on free publicity. That's why Dogecoin and Coinye West work. People are fickle, but these coins are just flash-in-the-pans and never last long.

And those are also my favourite three coins in order  Grin.

My favorite altcoin is Namecoin, because of the possibilities it provides for storing data.

I agree with the initial impact of an altcoin's name (I.e, junkcoin?).

But some alts do propose some interesting strategies.  Some have built-in inflation to encourage spending and discourage hoarding.  FREICOIN

Some have multiple rounds of multiple hashing algorithms - supposedly for security. QUARK

Proof of stake vs. proof of work.  PEERCOIN

Premined with built-in destruction during every transaction.  RIPPLE

Funding for open source, writing, etc. projects.  DVC

Yes, there are and will be many Altcoins.  Just be sure to check out their raison d'être, creator's rep, and community support before speculating on them!

For sure, the altcoin landscape of next year will have many RIP's, stalwarts, and hungry newbies.

Cheers,

JaiChai

I believe that Doge will make it to the big stage, it's the only high-demand currency besides Bit, Master, Feather, Quark and ofc Namecoin.

My expectations are that we're gonna have around 20 strong alts at the end of this year. Everything else will be newbies and similar things.
The market is probably going to turn in something like e-pay market with 10-20 successful companies (PayPal, Skrill, paysafecard, Stripe, Google Wallet etc.)
Personally, I'll try to help Turbocoin grow, I hope I'll succeed  Cheesy

Define success? As I explained above it has a big part to do with why people initially even bother jumping n too a coin. Why bother with a particular coin when there's hundreds offering pretty much exactly the same thing? It's all about hype and which is most popular. How do you become popular? Well, you hijack something that is already popular and ride the meme.

So many. Not all of them great. I personally think there will only be 4 or 5 strong alts by the end of the year. The success of a coin largely depends on the team behind it and their forward thinking, long term, strategy. Which is why my personal choice is EAC coin. I will be holding that one even if it does hit Cryptsy. Well, I might make a small profit first but I will go on to hold Wink

Personally, I think the speculative nature of the cryptocurrency bubble is likely to burst in 2014, which means a regulation of the market. As 'alternative' currencies gain more market share, they'll cease to be alternative, and we'll probably see five or ten strong players.

That being said, I do think PoS has significant place in the future. (More so than the marginal security improvements or other 'features' being touted by various new currencies.) There doesn't seem to be much love on here for Peercoin with the PoS/PoW hybrid, but I'm a fan (though I wish I'd been more of an early adopter).

There are a lot of new currencies being launched, but the vast majority of them will never gain traction.

If they have nothing new to offer, or look poorly setup (scammy) then the entire nature of the market will force them into obscurity - and essentially close them down.

That being said, it's not always the first to market that wins the market, Bitcoin itself has problems which are being addressed by some of the new crypto's, and although it can be argued there are too many, if nothing it shows the appetite many have to create the perfect online currency.

Three years ago I would have confidently told you that Bitcoin would never go anywhere.

Similarly I think a lot of people will be surprised by which altcoins gain and keep legs going forward.
I'm hoping for Worldcoin (WDC) due to selfish reasons, but I think I'll be surprised as well.

Memes and names sell as you can see with dogecoin and coinyecoin. It's an easy way to receive publicity and overhype a clone.

I'm mining a day or so on all the new currencies as they come out, just in case, although there seems little point in most of them. Doge is proving remarkably successful, as it seems to be the only one, oddly, given its peculiar origin, that has built up a community of apps, sites, trading, utilities and so on. It's the one I'm the most optimistic about, at this stage, even though it seems a meme-based currency should have short shelf-life. Probably helps that it wasn't pre-mined (as far as I can tell).
