Hi.

I'm a new user to BitCoin, I'm a little wary of running stuff on my machine without being a little aware of where it goes / what it does.. and so before running this I fired up Wireshark and watched where it went.. The BitCoin version I have is : 0.3.20.1 BETA

After doing a little digging, I understand that BitCoin connects to an IRC network to get a list of all the users, etc.. but I was surprised to discover the name was Smutfairy.com. I closed BitCoin pretty sharpish, and reviewed the capture session, wondering if it was a one-off, or was I loosing my mind and mis-reading it, and fired off another capture and BitCoin session, to discover it connected to the same again.

I know I might sound a little paranoid or edgy, but why SmutFairy? The only information I've been able to glean from a quick google is that the domain was mentioned and it was apparently being changed in June '10 to irc.lfnet.org..

Sorry for such a strange first post, but I am just looking for a bit more information on this. Smiley

I am the admin of irc.smutfairy.com - sorry the name frightened some of you - it was intended as a joke. I have changed the DNS PTR to point back to irc.lfnet.org which hopefully won't be so intimidating Wink

Aye, that's the topic I found the information from, but it's still connecting to Smutfairy. I was wondering if this was a change that was tabled/reverted/etc?

The change hasn't been reverted. The server's PTR is still irc.lfnet.org as it has been since I changed it before.

Smutfairy.com is an IRC server for irc.lfnet.org. It's safe.

It may be safe, but I could imagine the problem it might cause trying to connect from work. lol
