Exactly, this is pretty much just forcing low-content posts just to get your count up. What a short-sighted policy.
Agreed. Even worse than 'low content' would be wrong or mis-leading content. |

I usually don't have alot to say. But certain recent events have me wanting to say a few things in some of the forums above!
I agree with this, but don't see a way around it without some kind of "rookie" plugin for SMF that doesn't place posting restrictions on people unless veteran users censure them into the Newbie section during an initiation period. And that would be a fair amount of effort for which there is little incentive. |

It also cuts down on FAQs in the rest of the board. The only downsides for a highly-active site like this (which isn't dying for lack of users) is that it's annoying for those of us who're already conversant in the subject, and it makes the newbie forum's signal to noise ratio pretty low. ... due in part to posts like this. As I said in another post there is a simple way to circumvent the newbie forums through javascript, however I don't want to encourage people to do this unless they can figure it out themselves.
Edit: apparently now encouraging people to learn javascript is trolling so I take back my statements and I encourage everyone to stay as far away from javascript as possible. It is too late for me but maybe you all can be saved.

Maybe some form a minimal bitcoin deposit which is refunded after a bit could work too. A sort of fasttrack registration.
A small portion could be kept by bitcointalk to pay for server maintenance.

Its extremely annoying because the total time logged in never increases. I understand its "active" online time. But frankly the newbie forum is not that active and there isn't anything I can do to be active short of reading threads that I can't even reply to yet.

Maybe there are too many trolls (which now stay away from the forum, thanks to the newbie rules), so the admins were not able to ban all of them as suggested :-)
Who knows, besides the people who implemented this approach?
So let's take it easy, the hurdles are not too high.
And ... can't you move your high quality posts later out of the newbie forum yourself, after you achieved accreditation? Or is this not possible?

It is better to write five posts over here then to get content-less post later on. You came over here to get proper answers and discuss particular subjects you do not want to get hidden advertisements and other funny thigns that will annoy you more  |

I have to agree. There are many other different ways to stop spammers and you can always mute people who post in the wrong section more than once, then ban if they keep on doing it.
