Newb here, question about altcoins

Why are there so many altcoins? Days after days I see new altcoins popping up. Is it worth investing in the new altcoins?

What are the chances for it to actually be a successful coin...?

It is pretty hard to say if a coin will be successful. Do you research and by cheap coins if you are worried. If you are going to mine then mine a variety of coins and play it safe. It is all good fun anyway, kinda like play money when you where a kid. I like some of the more ridiculous coins about as they are fun. This seems to make them popular.
