you wake up and you would start visiting your usual hangouts (bitstamp, mt gox, bitcoincharts, bitcointalk, etc and on every site you visit, instead of the usual info, you would be greeted by the only this message: "The Experiment is over. Thank you for participating"Would it blow your mind, or might there be a small chance that you would have thought this possibility might have existed? I know this sounds very much like some crazy conspiracy theory (and I'm not suggesting I believe this conspiracy); But I can't help but wonder if someone is using this as some large-scale Libertarian experiment. Wonder what other people think about this?

For those folks who know how it works and seen open source, this is not even funny and not scary at all. There are to many independent miners who support the network and keep it running. Every bitcoin-qt wallet holds all the history of transactions. There is technically no way to "shutdown the experiment". Even if this was an experiment, it's running and working and people will be using the growing network of us miners for very long time.

True, but I'm not saying that the experiment wouldn't evolve into something else (some form of continuation, perhaps slightly altered)

But wouldn't that imply that someone / something was in control the entire time? (ie: not completely decentralized?)

If it happened yes. But source code says it won't.

Wonder what other people think about this? This would be absolutely awesome! It means that all the fiat currencies have ceased to exist and there's no reason to exchange BTC to any other currency; hence closing down all the trading platforms

Wonder what other people think about this? Well, considering the Bitcoin system and network itself isn't affected by this at all, new forums and exchanges would appear in no-time. Built by regular Bitcoin users who weren't involved in the conspiracy scheme. See, whether all these 3rd party websites are involved in some conspiracy or not, the system itself is by definition open, decentralized, verifiable, and independent.

Maybe Satoshi has a killswitch and is just an epic troll. Yeah, maybe, who knows? Oh, wait, thousands of developers, security and cryptography experts, who closely and thoroughly examine the Bitcoin source code know. That's the advantage of open source and 100% transparency - you can trust it because it doesn't need trust.

Hell yeah. More than possible I guess! Actually, I just was about to open a similar thread, since I start believing that we are witnessing hackers' most epic coup. I mean who the fuck can honestly tell me that there isn't some sort of backdoor or self-destruction mechanism built in the source code. Realizing that the whole thing was created by some elite hacker genius who is only known by an alias, one must be really naive to say that this is just an insane conspiracy theory. I bet that we gonna see very strange things going down in the next couple of month. And one thing is for certain. Every-fucking-thing is possible. Looking forward
