Why does picking up a package make it more suspicious? I order things off ebay that ship internationally and forget about them all the time. 3 months later I get a little notice in my mail that says I have a package, by that time I usually have no idea what I've received, but I go to pick it up anyway, whats to prove that package wasn't sent to me without my knowledge?
Hmm, okay i'll spell it out... slowly... if you pick a package up, it shows you ordered it. If you get a package in your mailbox containing drugs the police will not be able to prove that you ordered it, someone could have mailed it to you with malicious intent. If you pick a package up from the post office at a "poste restante" it makes it clear that : - you were expecting the package - you took steps to hide the link between the package and you So, someone ships me drugs without my knowledge, I receive a notice in my mailbox that I have a package, I assume its an ebay package and go pick it up. Somehow there is proof that I ordered drugs? You could argue your case, but why bother with a step that induces more. not less, risk? You going to pick up a package that you had sent on purpose to a PO box or to have held at the post office is more dangerous than just sending it to your house because it LOOKS like you intended and were aware of the package by going to pick it up. Why would you go and pick it up if you were not expecting it. Yes, you could make your argument, but it is foolish. When you go to the post office to pick things up you have to sign for it and this is just not a good idea if you want to use a site such as we are discussing. I wasn't saying that I would have anything held, I'm saying that if the package was held, because you were not home and it wouldn't fit in your mailbox, because it had signature confirmation, etc. Its usually more of an annoyance than anything else. I receive many packages that I don't remember ordering until after I open it and check my ebay account, and I usually have around 2-5 items that I've ordered and haven't received at any moment, so if the mailman tells me I have one, I go get it, no questions asked. |

Probably nothing would happen and you would be fine, but as far as I know if you are ordering a bulky package and silk road is involved this is probably not a good idea. This should be able to be left in your mail box.

As I see it, there are different scenarios here that will affect the risk. If you buy from LE masquerading as a seller, then the parcel may be tagged for interception from the get go and, if someone's trying to make an example of you to discourage other Silk Road users, LE might think it worth their while to wait for you to pick your package up.
If, on the other hand, the seller is legit but customs catches the parcel, then they'll probably do the usual thing. AFAIK, over here anyway,that means they destroy the package and you get a visit from the cops to see if you have something you shouldn't have in your home. At least for small amounts of illicit goods. In this case, an anonymous poste restante address may be better.
Anyway, I'm about done here. The only way to find out is to conduct experiments, and I'm not about to become a Silk Road user, so...

Well this thread got dragged up from the dreggs so I will just say it. Silk Road is one of the reasons why BTC has lost legitimacy in many peoples eyes. Yes cash of various currencies is still the #1 method which people pay for drugs but a massive black market culture is only going to add to the stigma people have with bitcoins. I have never googled it but I would have thought Silkroad would be gone by now. |
