Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I think it is infinite. 48 per block every 70 seconds, until the end of time.
Edit: Working it out, it is 170 days old, at 48 per block for that time there should be just over 10mil coins, but there are actually about 3.7mil. not sure how that works.
