I read about guy who forgot about his BTC and dumped HDD containing wallet. I'm pretty much sure he's not only one that did stupid mistake like that.
That made me wonder...what happens with that BTC. Is it lost forever? Will, with time, certain amount of BTC be lost that way? What do you think what percentage can / will be lost?

Satoshi has predicted that some BTC would be lost and claimed that it would only do good to the people that hold BTC since the supply has decreased thus every BTC is worth more.

Ah cool....so there is no recycle mechanism or something like that....
When i think about it, that kind of mechanism would be bad for anyone who wants to keep his BTC untouched for long period of time for whatever reason....

Anyway, thanks for answer.

No recycling mechanism, no.  There has been a lot of discussion on the forums about this and the ramifications etc over the years if you want to explore it more.  :-)

Will be interesting in the future to see how many lost coins there are. Satoshi was correct that lost coins means more value for other people's coins. I do wonder though what happens if too many coins where lost.

There is no such thing as too many coins lost (except is 95%of the BTC get lost).

There's enough satoshis for everyone.

They go to money heaven like the Confederate Dollar, Reichsmark and Deutsche Mark where Jesus uses them to buy angels new wings.
