Yes, HDD mining is real. I don't know too many coins like that, there's BURST, I think that SIA too, but google is your friend: hard drive mining site:bitcointalk.org
I find the video quite explanatory, although I clicked though some 30-60 seconds of it.

Shortly, you need BIG capacity and it may not worth it to buy HDDs specifically for this.

PS: if you get to mine you can gamble with BURST at Bitsler  Wink

I would love too mine with my HDDS. But actual rentability of BURST COIN is catastrophic..

1 TeraBytes shared = 25 Burstcoin / month = 0.64$...

so bad. http://burstcoincalculator.com/

4 TB HD is about 100 $, and give 2.56$/month => that's give a ROI next to ....  39 Months.... or 3.2years... (with FREE electricity)

And i think the HDD will fail before the 3 years.

SO BAD. I wait too for a HDD Miner

To setup a os and install the software to mine on HDD is possible as I know. I am not sure how do you confirm that about hard drive mining for the down altcoins in the market place.
So far I do not know any altcoins in the market can be mined with the hard-disk also then we cannot get the hashes on hard disc possible. I do not know how it has been defined with HDD simply confused. Please explain more about it.

yeah, it can mine using HDD but it's not profitable just a waste of time and a bit income even though this use has little power consumption.

I've been BURST mining with somewhere between 60-68 TB of disk since Jan. I can't really remember how much I have. It isn't that great. It is profitable compared to what you spend on electricity however it will take a long time to break even on the disks. That said... I traded all my burst a while back for TRON and then it 4x so I guess I am closer to break even?

Now, about that LTT video... That has got to be one of his worst videos. He had been hinting about that video for a few months and then he didn't even talk about BURST all that much. It was basically and advertisement for the case.

Anyways. I don't recommend BURST mining. The break even is too hard, the learning curve is really high... OMFG... it is high. I can Setup a 100 gpu mining farm before I can get 68 TBs running. No joke. Part of that is plotting takes a long time, but some of it is just trial  and error also.

That said... I met some of my best crypto friends online burst mining... We have one thing in common... we are all idiots.

Made me lol:

With all thats been said, i recently got into Burst mining with a single 8TB HDD. I figured if nothing happens to Burst i would at least repurpose it as a NAS storage for our home movies. I still think it's a good way to diversify and make the most out of your mining rig too. Imagine having a 19-GPU rig with HDD mining on the side. Talk about maximizing efficiency. Another good thing is that if GPUs start to become obsolete, HDDs could be next best thing to earn passive income.

I just wonder how long the motherboards or HDDs would last while power all the hardware connected to it.

only burst was worth it, but the diff skyrocket because they use cluster server to mine this coin, it's not for casual guys anymore, better to mine gpu coin, or just buy burst

Now there are very few coins for mining on the hard drive.
Very long payback period
Hard drives are expensive and illiquid in secondary markets
A lot of time has to be spent on preparing a hard drive for mining (4 GB hard drive can be formatted 24 hours)
forget it, and try to find something more interesting

Possible dude,
Mining using HDD such Burst coin doesn't make the computer dangerous but it's not profitable (for me) and out there are miners who still do it, either because he does it in office or he has else a motivation.
