If you want to hedge your investment against the chance that the whole bitcoin thing might collapse into itself, I don't think any altcoins will do you any good.

Almost all the value in the alt coins is in comparisons to bitcoin. There might be fluctuations in the exchange rate that you can use to make money trading back and forth, but as it is right now only bitcoins has any real non speculation based value.

There aren't many shops in the real world that accept litecoins or dogecoins to pay for pizzas or sports cars.

If you don't want all your eggs in one basket don't invest in other cryptocoins.
There is gold, stock market...

I recommend precious metals; imo its a great hedge.

Coins that are minted by your country that have a set face value as well as being worth x in their metal value is a good way to go. Securing at minimum face value.

It's not really investing in alt coins. They have no intrinsic value. It's just gambling.

I'd have to say that Litecoin is a good option.  People will start looking for the "next best thing" and Litecoin seems to be the most known other crypto currency.  Although Doge and Coinye may change that... but they do come across as jokes.  So Litecoin seems like a good option.

However, if you are considering a bit more long term (in which I mean 1-3 years) I'd consider looking into Earthcoin (EAC).  You can probably tell I am a proponent of that by my name but that is because I think the development team and community are going to make this coin a competitor in the crypto market.
